Cozzer’s Question 03/06/24

How did you get into rock/metal?

I’ll go first. I was raised in a household with rock and metal music always playing. I grew up listening to the greats such as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Dio, Black Sabbath & Whitesnake. However, rock/metal music really clicked with me the day my dad brought home a CD of Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park. I must have played that CD to death.

I was born the same year that the Rolling Stones song,I can’t get no satisfaction, hit number one, and it was all downhill from there .

    Two main influences:

First, I found fanmade music videos for some of my favorite series. It was silly edgy middle school stuff… But I ended up becoming a big fan of the bands featured.

Second, my dad was also into rock, and he helped me find the best of it to listen to once he realized I was starting to like some of his favorite bands.

My cousin introduced me to Whitesnake when I was around 11, and I’ve never looked back since!

My story isn’t that interesting. I was 13 years old when I stumbled upon Nightwish’s Angels Fall First soundtrack and fell in love. At the same time, I was also amazed by Evanescence. So it began; I first explored symphonic metal and power metal. Later it was classic heavy metal. Then, I discovered death-doom bands like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and others. Later, I got into traditional and epic doom (like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Electric Wizard, Count Raven and many others). Then, I discovered post-punk and darkwave (Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Dead Can Dance, Nosferatu, Rosetta Stone, Sisters of Mercy, Nick Cave and many others), and so on. I also enjoy folk and rock-n-roll, and of course the hard rock’s classics (especially Alice Cooper). I find more and more new, peculiar things to listen to thanks to Spotify, so the adventure is still on, and sometimes it is so difficult to classify the things I listen to 😀

By the way nice choice of bands, I listen to all of them (except for Linkin Park, not a great fan, to be honest 😅)

I was born in 1957 and there were many great rock songs around, What did I know? Dad listened to classical while working at his desk at home and mom enjoyed putting on her records and popular Latvian music. When I finally perked up my ears and saw Elvis on TV I realized there was a great rock and roll world out there. The 1960s were my childhood growing up years so after I got in the teens there was no stopping me I educated myself in rock and roll starting from the 1950s and my radio was turned off only when I went to bed, It was the age of no PCs so I took notes and paid attention to what I heard and started collection 45s.

My story is that everywhere we went in the car it’d be iron maiden,Metallica, bon Jovi or AC/DC , I still love those classic bands but my first personal entry into rock with my own money was the green day album American idiot after seeing them perform the song live on TV. After that it was likely take over the breaks over by fall out boy. Bands such as shinedown talked a lot to me at school but nowhere near as much as Three Days Grace who resonated immediately. Bands like that would be on my ipod , others include madina Lake, red jumpsuit apparatus and black stone cherry. There is countless other bands that friends might have introduced me too aswell. Like my chemical romance , foo fighters.

so yeah thats the long and short of it and nowhere near complete haha

Hmm, well, I had a chaotic friend, let’s call her Gail. She spent the night a few times, and one particular night, she brought a portable 8-track and a copy of Judas Priest’s “British Steel.” We fell asleep listening, and I suppose Priest entered my subconscious. From that moment on, I was baptized in the faith. Praise be!!!!!

    Omg love Linkin Park.
My dad used to play Tom petty & the rolling stones so that got me into rock early on then my uncle got me into harder rock. I discovered metal through music samplers. Infected by Demon Hunter hooked me forever.

I never did, I’m more a jazz fan, and I am always deeply moved by classical music.

It wasn’t played in our house, my parents were more folky music people. I discovered rock through friends at school and got into metal at uni, as my flatmate was a massive Metallica fan.

My dad was always listening to rock when I was younger, then he said I should watch the movie “Rock Of Ages” It changed everything for me and I’m now super into all different kinds of music but mostly 80s kinda glam/hair metal! 🙂

Parents were more likely to listen to music than watch TV, and my dad in particular liked rock where my mom liked pop. I started getting into metal in my tweens as that was the very beginning of the “hair metal scene.” I still remember being absolutely blown away the first time I listened to Van Halen I.

A schoolmate gave me a cassette tape with a live album by Iron Maiden called Maiden Japan (a pun on the Deep Purple album, Made in Japan) on one side and Back In Black on the other.

I wasn’t ready at that time for AC/DC however I loved Maiden immediately. I went out and bought Powerslave the following week.

I was ribbed mercilessly. Apparently I looked too wimpish to be a Heavy Metal fan 🤘😎
