Download – From A Different Perspective [Part 1]

Friday.

We arrived after work on the Friday, just as the rain was letting up, there was still a hint of life left in the grass on our first day at Download ever!

We headed in from the south car park, doing the half an hour trek through the car parks and orange campsite to reach the arena, and surprisingly got in quite quickly despite the huge queues reported earlier on in the day.

Once in the arena we headed over to the main stage to meet up with most of the Fox Rocks crew to catch up and watch the impressive black stone cherry! You’ve probably already read Fox’s review, so I won’t go into it again, if you haven’t read his review you can check it out here!

Wheatus – Live at Download Festival

After that we wandered around the arena to get our bearings and headed over to the avalanche stage in the blue tent to catch Wheatus; we have already seen them live at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham, and I (Rex) many years before that as a support act for Busted, so we thought we knew what to expect. However the lead singer had a cold and there seemed to be some sound issues, but despite this they still put on a great show!

Starting with ‘Temporary Song’ followed by ‘A Little Respect’ by Erasure, the crowd was jumping singing along, a few people around us were watching them for the first time and were surprised that the Teenage Dirtbag “One hit wonders” had so many other under rated incredible songs! We were glad to hear peoples enthusiasm for the band and let them know that we thought they are so much better in an intimate venue where you feel like you really get to know the band, and thier chaotic ‘audience picks the next song’ set list!

They re released thier first album as their record company lost the original masters, but Wheatus now has sole rights as they are no longer signed and have added 10 more songs that were previously ‘lost’!

We were also incredibly excited when they announced a tour with Bowling for Soup and Magnolia Park for later on in the year, and booked tickets as soon as they went on sale!

Wheatus finished thier set by playing the eagerly awaited for ‘teenage dirtbag’ with Mega Ran and Kid Bookie joining them on stage for a little bit of rapping.

The crowd quickly replaced its self with Busted fans, even with the majority staying we managed to get even closer to the stage!

Busted came jumping on stage and straight into the first two songs ‘Air Hostess’ followed by ‘Meet You There’ before gushing about how insane it was that they were playing at Download Festival, and from photos we saw later on it looked like a lot of people were there for it!

Busted played banger after banger with 5 songs from their first album ‘BUSTED’ such as ‘You Said No’, ‘Loser Kid’, and ‘That’s What I Go To School For’, as well as 7 from their album ‘A Present For Everyone’ including ‘She Wants To Be Me’, and ‘Crashed the Wedding’ the crowd were as enthusiastic as the band, and the band were so happy to be there, you could definitely tell by their energised performance jumping around and saying Fuck a lot.

During the set Charlie said they spent a lot of time thinking about what song to cover and they thought they should do a metal song, however this led to deciding to cover the most pop song they knew ‘MMMBop’ by Hanson, despite being a rock and metal festival this was well received!

We know that a 00’s boyband is a whole new thing for download, but we hope it makes a return for coming years! A hit of nostalgia is a great way to prepare for the headliner Queens of Stone Age.

We joined back up with the rest of the Fox Reviews crew to watch Queens of stone age where we caught ‘Go With The Flow’ and ‘No One Knows’  before walking back to the bus depot. After waiting for what seemed like forever, we finally managed to get on the bus out of the rain, for 4 minutes at least, before the bus slipped off the temporary road and got stuck! We then had to get off the bus and wait for another before finally managed to get back to our friends where we stayed for the weekend!

Wet, muddy, and defeated

For our first day at Download left a great impression and we were eager to get back on Saturday!

Keep your eyes peeled for our next segment!

Being a crusty old punk / rock fan (and I do mean old ) I used to despair at the way some of the modern day festival line-ups were headed. I guess I was just being a bit muso-snobby about the whole thing. Like Coldplay / Shania Twain etc etc at Glastonbury … and now Busted at Download? And Wheatus?

I’m too old fashioned to consider these type bands ‘fitting’ the bill.

But hey! I’m not a complete philistine. Though I prefer old school punk / ska / reggae/ classic and Blues and southern rock / psych etc, I’m open to anything.

And Busted are a damn good fun pop-band! I think some of our (UK) bands of that ilk suffered a little from not being perceived as cool as their contemporaries on the Warped Tour in USA for instance. So good on ’em! I’m glad they seem to have gone down well.

And you know what? I even enjoyed Coldplay and Shania @ Glasto. Heck – I even added some songs to my Apple Music playlist.

    (Damn! I am getting old!!!) 😉 😀

I completely agree that Busted and Wheatus don’t ‘fit’ the bill for a festival like download, but for a lot of people (like myself) Busted were the band to get me into playing guitar, they were even the first band I ever saw live!
I may be incredibly biased, but they will always have a big part in my heart!

I did move onto heavier stuff as I grew up and moved heavily into the metal scene, then emo and pop punk, and in my early 20’s my life changed a bit and I’d be found at more raves and club nights.

I think adding different, unexpected bands to festivals shows solidarity in music, no matter what you listen to, or what your story is, you’re included, you’re not alone!

Shania also has one hell of a voice!

I think what makes busted perfectly fine for download is I consider them a gateway band for the heavier bands. People need to find a way into rock as it’s not really on mainstream radio anymore. So I’m all for it. For what it’s worth rather than pop I’d stick them in as pop punk which is slightly closer to the rockier side that people are accustomed to. Charlie even has a full on rock band in fightstar plus they all play instruments 🤘

I agree down doesn’t need to book too many of these bands but I dont mind a sprinkling of them to add variety and fun 😁

I’ve just checked flights, 46 hours with 3 changes! Not that it’ll stop us, it’ll just take a little longer to plan!

Aaaghhh 46hrs? Where is taking you’ll to the moon? 😀. So my hometown is a place called Shillong in the North Eastern part of India. A little bit more travel and planning I guess 😄.

From London, to Dublin, to Hamad, to Indira Ghandi, and finally Shillong! The layovers look longer than the flights though!

Oh and Fox Reviews (is this the only way to address you?), I introduced rock to my daughter starting with Bon Jovi (who else)☺️, so far she likes it she says. She likes It’s My Life, I think its the video 🤭. Listened to a few bands, getting to Nirvana.
