King 810: Exploring ‘Under The Black Rainbow’ EP – A Nu-Metal Journey

Introduction

King 810, the powerful nu-metal band hailing from Michigan, has been making waves since their formation in 2007. Their unique sound effortlessly blends nu-metal riffs with the raw energy of alt-rock and the mesmerizing beats of electronica.

Their journey to stardom began with the release of the EP “Midwest Monsters” in 2012, followed by the thrilling debut of their first full-length album later that same year. While they have released several EPs since then, today, our undivided attention is captivated by their latest offering, “Under The Black Rainbow.”

Review

Track 1: Hurry Hurry Ahura Mazda

The sheer brilliance that is woven into this song is truly something to behold! “Hurry Hurry Ahura Mazda” encapsulates the captivating tale of Ahura Mazda, where ‘Ahura’ signifies “lord” and ‘Mazda’ embodies “wisdom”. This divine entity is known by various names across many faiths, each one resonating with its own distinctive significance.

The song captivates listeners from the start with an eerie melody and a repeating bass line that sets the mood. As the low end riffs kick in, the drums gradually build up, adding depth to the track. Around 1:24, the song reaches its powerful breakdown, creating an intense and emotional moment. David Gunn’s lyrical prowess shines through, showcasing his genius. A couple of examples can be seen below;

“The human is a humid sack of water”

“Heathans dance upon my chest when I rest”

Track 2: Sue’s Song

Probably the heaviest song on the EP , it begins with a killer synth sound. Guitars kick in, with drums that while simplistic in nature have you nodding your head. The way singer (David Gunn) delivers the words “Sue Girl” reminds me of the track “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds. Not sure if this was an accident or not! The track repeats the numbers “6,5,6,6,6,5” not quite sure what they mean but its damn catchy!

Track 3: Boogie with the Boogieman

The song starts with a rather playful avant-garde tune on the piano, with experimental flair. The chorus is really great and makes you want to move your feet!

“Black feet when we dance on the sun
I held her hand while she spun
Black feet when we dance on the sun
I held her hand while she spun”

The songs bridge is pretty different in that its essentially dance moves , so I would love to be there when they performed that purely for the visual spectacle!

Track 4: Glow

The first song to be released as a single and sounds like a Smashing Pumpkins fever dream!! It still retains a King 810 sound. I particularly enjoy the pre-chorus

“And if you had a light, you could guide our way to what’s right
My baby, what’s wrong?
We don’t utter their words, we sing songs, and speak tongues”

This song is magical and sounds like a spiritual experience for the band. Can’t wait to hear more like this in the future!

Track 5: Bigger Than The Stones

The song is a reference to the band The Rolling Stones. Overall its a sad song telling a heartbreaking story. Its about dreams dying when people part ways. This is definately the saddest song King 810 have put out, the final line echos and really hits home.

Conclusion

Overall I’d say KING is evolving as a band and are open to trying new things and this EP is proof of their graft and ever changing style.

8.5/10
