Review

Toxic Love

The track kicks off with a powerful combination of drums and guitar/bass that makes me feel like I could march right along! Picture heavy boots stomping, fueled by a fierce energy. It’s got that undeniable drive. As the song progresses, a delicious riff weaves its way through, tying everything together beautifully.

The vocals are intense, raw, and full of emotion, never losing their powerful impact. The song delves into the theme of toxic love and the way it can consume and dominate a person’s life. Even if the vocal style may not be to everyone’s taste, I believe many can relate to the message. Two particular parts of the lyrics really resonate with me, and I feel a strong connection to them.

“Tell me how I feel
Tell me what to think”

“Her grip it’s made me sick, I need to get myself out
Now I’ve seen the truth, I refuse to rot with you”.

Overall, it offers a powerful start to the EP; it pulls no punches, that’s for sure! I particularly like the musical arrangements between 1 minute and 1:30.

Narrow Minded

Headbanging Activate! The opening riff kicks off this track with an impressive energy, though I feel the cymbals in the drums don’t quite contribute to the overall sound at this point; I would have preferred to leave them out entirely. Then, around the seven-second mark, a strange vocal sound emerges that feels like it’s straight out of a horror movie, pulling you in before you get hit with straight up intensity!

I must say, the drums work exceptionally well alongside the singer here. My least favorite moment comes when the vocalist leans a bit too much into clean singing at times. The blast beats around the one-minute mark are fantastic, and the vocals from that moment on are equally impressive.

This song encapsulates the feelings of those who dismiss this genre without a second thought. The band points out, “A lot of people are negative about things they don’t like/understand and, as a result, are not open to giving it the time of day.” I urge you, even if this style of music isn’t for you, please acknowledge the artistry and effort that went into creating it. It deserves your respect at the very least.

C.E

Honestly, I’m a bit confused. Spending 36 seconds on what sounds like a phone call feels like a waste for the E.P. I believe another track would have been a better choice. If it had to be included, it should have been placed at the end; right now, it just breaks the flow.

Butterfly Effect

The core message of this song seems to be that your actions carry consequences, and it’s important to take responsibility for them. However, I find the tempo a bit off, with inconsistent vocal rhythms and some syllables feeling out of place.

The concept is solid, and with a bit more polish, it could shine! I do appreciate the connection between the first and second verses, especially with the slower, more intense tones.

Interview

We caught up with the band to discuss Cause and Effect.

Why Cause and Effect? What’s the meaning behind the name of the EP?

“With the EP starting off with toxic love , I looked at the lyrics and basically saw it as someone controlling another. I then looked at the lyrics of the other songs and saw it as the after effect”

“I watched the Matrix trilogy around this time and heard a quote by one of the characters with the name of the EP and said to the boys this is it , the name of the EP .”

What inspired the song narrow minded?

“From the music side of things I wanted a song that would hit hard and be fast paced. From the start we experimented with different feels and tempo and wanted a song that was a lot more hardcore.”

What do you think this EP has that your self titled one didn’t?

“In my opinion it has more of a story to it , the songs can be linked together and there is more aggression and diversity in sounds.”

“This change in sound is the way in which we are looking to continue”

A nice critique. I agree with you about strange inserts in albums – they get trickier to get past on vinyl.

Ah yeah I’d not thought about vinyls but that’s a great point

I almost always purchase the media of my music, sometimes in two or more formats. It is a habit.

Every habit is an expensive habit, I guess, if you are into it. New vinyl in NZ is usually between $60 to $100 NZD.
