Percival ‘Love You To Death’ Review and Exclusive Interview – Rock and Metal Band from Newport

Introduction

Coming from Newport in Wales, Percival brings energy with their blend of rock and metal. With melodic structure and excellence on various instruments, I have no doubt they will only continue to grow.

Their goal is to “Bring rock band to Wales, and the rest of the world”. It’s not going to be long before they are performing to audiences around the globe that’s for sure!

The track kicks off with a raw riff that sets the pace for the entire song. As the bass and drums join in, the complexity of the music builds, adding to its overall impact. The vocals are crystal clear, showcasing the excellent mixing of the track. The singer’s tone is both charming and tinged with a touch of sadness, which perfectly complements the song’s subject matter.

I’m struggling to decide whether I enjoy the rhyming couplets or if I find them too simple. It might sound a bit harsh, but I believe the ends of the verses are more lyrically interesting than the rest of the song. For instance, when the band uses the word “Me” to end three consecutive lines, it feels like it disrupts the flow of the song. However, there are two lines in the song that I absolutely love; they fit together perfectly and show how rhyming can still propel the song forward.

“How it feels when we flip the picture”

“Take my word like some sacred scripture”

The way each section ends with different versions of “Alone” is interesting. The slight vocal changes in those sections create a very effective hook. Also noteworthy is the 20-second guitar solo which is absolutely superb – it’s brilliant, in fact! This guitar solo serves as the midpoint of the song, offering two different contexts for the development of the lyrics, which I find quite valuable. And of course, the fact that it’s technically flawless only adds to its appeal!

The latter part of the song exudes a sense of desperation, with the vocals now conveying heightened emotion and almost a sense of pain in the lyrics. I believe this adds a very impactful element to the song. The harmonies on the vocals are subtle but add value to the overall experience. I appreciate the way the song concludes, giving off the impression that the band has set their instruments down and left the recording studio. It’s like the end of a relationship that’s fizzled out.

Overall “Love You To Death” provides a promising introduction to the band from Newport! With great song structure and an interesting sound I can’t wait to see what comes next. One of the most ear-worm worthy first songs from a band that I can remember!

Follow Up Interview

What inspired the song, was there a particular relationship?

“The song was inspired by myself (Owain) I was navigating a really rough time in my life where I was treated terribly by those I considered friends after losing someone very important to me the song is an indirect comparison to how I felt about those people at the time but now has become so much more, it’s become and expression of individuality and not being tethered by the people who keep you down”

How long did you spend in the recording studio?

“We spent 8hrs in the studio”

What came first the lyrics or the tune?

“The music came first it was a way for me to release my feelings through music”
