Black Stone Cherry: When The Pain Comes – A Heartfelt Rock Journey

Hailing from Kentucky, Black Stone Cherry has been delivering top-quality rock music since their inception in 2001. Their most recent album, “Screamin’ At The Sky,” was released in 2023, cementing their status as a band with a very promising future. Today we take a closer look at their latest single from the album, “When The Pain Comes.”

The song starts with a meaty guitar riff that demands your immediate focus, setting a solid foundation for the remainder of the song. Chris Robertson’s heartfelt vocals, coupled with his guitar skills, guide the listener through the emotional journey of the track. On this occasion, the emotions are of pain and hardship, but with a hopeful message of resilience and facing it head-on. The lyrics are defiant and incredibly impactful.

The melody in the chorus is so catchy that if you’re feeling down, just press play and let it work its magic! The beat gradually intensifies, pulling you in deeper. It’s in this part of the track where the band’s talent shines through, showcasing incredible drumming and bass skills, and a mouth-watering guitar solo!

“Sometimes we take it too far
To find who we are
When the pain comes (pain comes)
I will not be afraid
I am here to stay
Even when the pain comes (pain comes)”

The unique vocal arrangement in the bridge is truly impactful. The theme of standing strong in the midst of fear shines through once again. The vocal delivery in this section sends shivers down my spine, showcasing the raw emotion in every lyric. It’s evident that there has been significant growth from their earlier works, where some tracks may have lacked that emotional connection. It’s no surprise to me they are rapidly rising and headlining their own shows at Wembley Arena, UK with Skillet & Ayron Jones.

However, I have some doubts about the music video for this track where a woman is seen running through the woods in a white outfit, then later in all black. It seems like the black outfit symbolizes negative emotions such as fear and pain. Towards the end, she encounters herself after making it out of the woods. While I understand the concept, I’m not entirely convinced that the handheld camera visuals and woodland setting are the best choice. Thankfully the music more than makes up for it.

I personally have not felt a connection like this to a Black Stone Cherry song since “Such A Shame” from their 2011 album “Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea”!

The production quality of this track and the entire album represents a significant step up from their previous efforts. The various instruments are showcased beautifully, with the layers adding depth and richness to the music. The top layer riffs complement the rhythmic base, creating a powerful and energetic sound.

I believe that “When The Pain Comes” truly showcases the band’s artistic abilities. The heartfelt lyrics and exceptional instrumental work make it truly special. This band is destined for great things, and I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them!

For me, these guys are new to the scene. They are however, the first band in a long time to really catch my ear. I’m a southern blues rock fan from long ago. The Almans, Lynyrd, Marshall Tucker…like that.
