Interview
I guess first of all, why SNM as a band name?
So when we first started the band, the lineup was 3 girls: Sophie, Nicci, and Mimi. We were 14 and in an all-girls grammar school, so the idea that our initials all came together to sound like a fetish genre was pretty funny to us, and it just stuck as the lineup changed.
You’re part of the London music scene, what’s that like?
It’s a difficult scene. There’s a lot of really talented and genuine musicians we’ve met from playing/attending gigs that we just absolutely love, but you can also run into a lot of people who chat a load of absolute sh*t and act like they’re 50 times bigger than everyone around them. You’ve really got to take everything these people say with a pinch of salt.
Was your melodic sound something you worked towards or is it something that just happened?
Mimi is the one that writes melodies. “I’ve tried to create music that brings a more accessible side to the band’s other grunge influences. I’ve never really sat down and thought about writing a catchy melody; I just write lyrics and imagine how the words would sound to me if the persona I’m writing about were to perform them.”
What makes the band so close on and off stage?
What all of us have in common is a shared passion and ambition for a career in music. Even with our individual differences, all of our lives are completely centered around music, which has allowed us to form this really deep and strong connection with each other.
Where did the track name “Borne of my rib” come from?
In a nutshell, the song is about an evil alter ego with a plan to take over the initial inhabitant’s body. A lot of S&M songs include imagery from Genesis because Eve ties in very well with how women are viewed in society, which inspired the idea of this kind of persona coming after the first and causing evil and havoc.
Which line of your lyrics is your personal favourite?
“I will hold no mercy, maimed by the gavel. You used to walk on me, but now you are my gravel.”
If you could play any festival in the world, which one would it be? And why?
Glastonbury. It’s really going to be almost every band’s dream to play there, but we would just love it.
How did the band meet?
Sophie and Mimi met at an incredibly strict and disciplined grammar school. With both of them having such a strong passion for music, they instantly bonded and managed to find the original bassist. This lineup of the band used to perform at a band night organized by Mimi’s guitar teacher, Chris, and from this, they met Harry. He joined as the lead guitarist in the band, then due to differences in career ambitions, Ethan was recruited from the same band night to take over on bass.
How is playing in Camden now? It’s changed a lot in the recent years from the grungy place it used to be. Do you think it still has a lot of that personality, or is it fading?
Camden has definitely changed a lot from how it seemed before. There probably weren’t vapes being shoved in your face on the high street at its peak, but there are still venues and crowds with the same kind of feel we would imagine it would have had. People are really kind and normally welcoming at the venues there, and there’s certainly no lack of unique individuals!!
Is there any plan for a debut album? If so, when are you planning on releasing it and what is it going to be called?
We currently have about 20 songs that are ready to be recorded, so we definitely have plans for an album. Just as soon as we are able to get back in the studio!
What would you say makes SNM different to any other band?
Depth, consistency, and our interpersonal relationships. We focus on energy and feel throughout both our live performances and recordings. We also have a unique image and don’t shy away from doing things others may avoid for fear of public opinions.
Which bands inspired you the most?
Hole, PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Patti Smith

If you could have someone else’s song as your own, what song would it be and why?
I want to be adored by The Stone Roses. I think it speaks for itself; it’s timeless, has religious lyrics, and is one of those songs that we can play no matter the time and place, and it always hits.
If you could select one band currently or in the past to cover one of your songs, who would it be and why?
The Smiths!! We think with such a unique sound, they would bring a really interesting take on our music. With Morrissey’s intellectual style in correspondence with the band’s technical ability, we reckon they would do an amazing job.
Do you have anything exciting coming up that you want to tell fans about?
We will all be moving to Brighton! We have really been enjoying the London scene and will, of course, be back for shows, but will be centered there from September onwards. We will be performing a farewell show on the 25th of August.
