Electric vs Acoustic Guitar: What’s Your Preference? Cozzer’s Question 1 Week Takeover

Hi everyone! Cozzer is actually away today. He is celebrating his mini-honeymoon with Vixen. They got married over the weekend. (Click the link to send congratulations!) Due to this I (Fox) will be taking over Cozzer’s Question this week!

Question

Which do you prefer; Electric or acoustic guitar , and why?

For me I think I’ll have to go with electric guitar on this one. My influences growing up were bands that played these hair-raising riffs. They ignited something in me. This was what made this website possible.

Still, I also love acoustic songs. I especially enjoy acoustic versions of songs that once used an electric guitar. I will still choose electric as my main preference. But sometimes acoustic delivers that takeaway feeling that we all love.

Don’t forget to answer the question in the comments section!

I’d have to say acoustic at the mo. I’ve recently got into listening to some serious Spanish guitar riffs.though electric’s great!

Depends on the day, but I lean acoustic because that’s primarily what I’ve played over the years. Love me a good wail now and again, but I tend to like the overall sound of an acoustic guitar.

It doesn’t have to be both a fancy and a schmancy guitar, but it can’t be one of those near-cardboard acoustics either. The tone resonates through your body and has an earthy quality that you won’t find in an electric. Devoid of effects (including pickup arrangements), electrics lack that deeper feeling. Of course, an electric’s sound is much more easily manipulated to get sounds that an acoustic can’t normally achieve (very well, anyway) — but that’s the beauty of the electric; the flexibility.

When I play with my punk-rock-folk-blues influenced music on an acoustic, it has a gutsy feel without relying on external effects. Besides, it really makes people look at you funny when you play the “Owner of a Lonely Heart” intro on it.

That’s probably the best advertisement I’ve ever read for acoustic over electric !

Do you think that the cost of the acoustic guitar directly correlates to the sound or do you think that the money doesn’t always equal quality?

          1. michael branscáth avatar

No amount of money spent on a guitar will make you sound like a god if your technique is mediocre. I say mid-range guitars, electric or acoustic, are the best for most people unless they need to have their cock-of-the-walk bragging rights to stoke their ego.

Budget acoustics can sound okay, but they tend to lack that resonance because they use such cheap wood (or plywood, ugh). But goodness knows that can sound pretty darn good when you’re a beginner (full disclosure: I owned a Jasmine for years before engineered wood, which is a budget Takamine). I currently play a mid-range Yamaha and it had some of the richness of sound I like. I also have a Wechter 12-string that retailed for about five times the Jasmine.

Can I tell the difference between all three? Sure. But honestly, my skills were never up to snuff and I used gimmicks to make it sound like I had more skill than I had. As beautiful as my Wechter looks and sounds, I would never have bought it at retail. I got it for a steal, but my ability has never done the poor thing justice. And it really doesn’t sound much better overall than the Yamaha in my hands. Someone else? Who knows.

Thanks for that information, I could never play the guitar I’m blessed with the smallest hands on a man ever like seriously smaller than most petite women so the guitar has always passed me by despite how much I love them !

Of the 2 I’d prefer to play acoustic even though I prefer the sound the electric makes and I have no idea why!

LOL. Small hands force creative playing technique. You should try picking up something used and plink around with it. If all else fails, get an electric, which can be more forgiving — especially when you crank up the distortion/overdrive. Throw in verb, chorus and delay and you could be an overnight shoegazer. 🙂

Who can choose? 😬 Both, for their own sound, of course. The song really depends, and sometimes you can tell that it would maybe sound better under the other.
‘Alexisonfire’ is electric but with vocals and the message, it fits perfectly. But Dallas Green took his sound to ‘City In colour’ which fit in with the acoustic sound!

This is tough, because I’ve heard so many artists blow me away on acoustic, and that was always my “thing” when I played…but I tend to lean towards electric. There is something that touches the soul when I hear a great Jimi Hendrix, or Mark Knopfler, or Adrian Belew riff.

Electric guitar (the magnificent Mick Ronson) is what catapulted Bowie into the spotlight after years of struggling with acoustic-driven songs. And, when a group comes up with an “acoustic version” of a song I’ve enjoyed as electric-driven, I have to say that 9 times out of 10, it’s a major disappointment.

So, the rock goddess part of me makes me vote “electric.” 🙂

Life would be so boring if we all 100% agreed! I do agree there are some songs that translate well into acoustic versions, but for the most part, if a song started out electric, that would ultimately be my preferred version. Maybe I’m just not so good with Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. 😀

I’m an acoustic guitar fan. I don’t feel comfortable with the way the electric sits and feels in my hands. I feel more relaxed with my acoustic and I also enjoy the way it feels to play when it’s just the six strings and you playing the chords. I think it’s just taking away the playing of songs when you can alter the sound and distortion and make chords sound different using the electric guitar. But each to their own

I love all of the ways you can manipulate the sound of the electric guitar, but there’s nothing more beautiful than the sound of the acoustic guitar when it’s played by someone who really knows the flamenco style. While she’s primarily known for her sexy comedic talents, Charo plays absolutely amazing flamenco guitar. https://youtu.be/eQm1MKZ0GoU?si=MdVL09v9erW5UoO_

Ooh, how can you ask that? I love rock, good heavy rock, so electric is always going to be up there. I love classical guitar too though, so acoustic claims the laurels there. In between? There’s the resonator guitar a type of acoustic guitar amplified by metal cones in the body, giving a ‘steel’ sound comparable to electric guitar. There’s a blues musician we see every year when we go to Italy, he spends the summer there playing the various resorts and busking outside bars. He plays the blues on a resonator, plus a mean slide guitar. Here’s a clip for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA6i6Ktamhw

There is so much value in the acoustic guitar; imagine life without Tesla’s intro to “Love Song,” or life without Spanish and classical guitar, or the host of songs we love that are acoustic only.  I even appreciate acoustic country music as a genre, mostly old school stuff.

But for me, I practically feel unalive without electric guitar, and that has been since early childhood for as long as I have memory.  It is such a maligned, yet versatile instrument that can be played just as gently as the acoustic, yet also aggressively for those of us who not only enjoy it, but also need it as we get to our emotions.  I try imagine specific songs, guitar solos, riffs, intros, etc, evoking the same deep feelings acoustically as they do with electric guitar, but I don’t think that could ever happen for me.  Of course this is a very personal choice with really no room for argument (much like debating favorite electric guitarists futile! 😂).  And even though I do have a favorite (John Petrucci), there are so many others I appreciate from Carlos Santana to Joe Satriani, even all of the 80s cheesy arena rock and hair metal bands who still hold a nostalgic and important place in my musical memories, the soundtrack of my life.

I could go on forever about my passion for the instrument and what about I love about it, as well as innumerable songs and artists (John Petrucci’s “Wishful Thinking” come to mind, and Dream Theater’s electric guitar intro to Count of Tuscany).  Electric guitar has absolutely made my life better for over a half century now, and I cannot imagine my life without it. Thanks for the platform to prattle on! 🤓🎸🤘

IRL, I don’t make that kind of exclusive choice. Currently I’m playing acoustic (when I play guitar) more than half the time.

But playing along with the hypothetical question: I’d take the electric because you can make a wider range of sounds with an electric guitar, and I want the variety. None of those sounds will sound exactly like an acoustic guitar, but that’s not my claim. And I would miss the acoustic though.

Acoustic is my go to as a musician and a lover of music. Back when I was a metal head, electric was king. Now, at age 52 I am more of a “mellow head” than a metal head. I’m sticking with acoustic. Bonus, my wife loves when I play my early 90s acoustic Fender. That is a further motivator for my choice of acoustic. 😉

I think thats a really important motivator both for choice and for reason to play 🙂
