A perfect review for Halloween, Mr Alice Cooper! Our travels this week take us to the First Direct Arena in Leeds, a large venue with a 13781 capacity, hidden behind the bustling city. We think this is one of our favourite arenas for a seating gig as there was plenty of space in your seat, and it looked like it was a building designed for it! Even the furthest back seats were way closer than a lot of ‘close’ seating we have seen!

Alice Cooper had two support bands joining him on this occasion, first on stage was The Meffs, a 2 piece punk band with Lily on guitar/vocals and Lewis on drums/backing vocals, they were absolutely fantastic! Their enthusiasm and raw energy would have been better suited to standing gig where you could join them dancing and really get into thier music, in our opinion!

With a pretty classic punk sound they definitely made fans of us, and even more so when they covered ‘Breathe’ by Prodigy! Although their set was short they still made an effort to chat to the crowd, where they got boo’d for being from Essex, which Lily responded saying “No one likes people from Essex”. We really enjoyed their set with the standout songs for us being ‘Broken Britain, Broken Brains’ and ‘Clowns’, we are looking forward to seeing what they do in the future and will hopefully see them live again, they are on tour in January so hopefully our calendar aligns with the dates. We did manage to get an interview with the duo, so keep a look out for that!
Primal Scream were the second support band of the night, and with a huge difference in band members from the duo previously, 9 people came on stage for Primal Scream, consisting of a guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist, 3 backing singers, a multi instrumentalist, and the glittery suit wearing, 63 year old lead singer Bobby!
The band started with playing a few of their newer songs including ‘Deep Dark Waters’ from their new album Come Ahead that’s being released on November 8th, and ‘Jailbird’ where the lead singer tripped over a wire! Bobby grew up with an admiration for Don Revie, an ex Leeds United Manager, he even named a lot of their former players, this obviously got the crowd cheering along to ‘Movin’ On Up’ that he dedicated to the team.

Primal Scream performed some of their biggest hits ‘Loaded’, ‘Country Girl’ and finished the set with ‘Rocks’ where the whole crowd sang along and clapped in unison, Although we thought that Bobby’s voice wasn’t once what it was, the instruments were played incredibly well and the back up singers made up any slack!
During the break we decided to go check out the merch where we bought a signed Alice Cooper vinyl of his latest album, Road. We also enjoyed the backing music that was playing in the arena so much so that I, St. Jimmy, chose one of the songs as my song for Last Week’s Tunes
I, Rex have seen Alice cooper before, and despite the many many concerts I have been to, still put Alice Cooper at the top of the best gigs! I had been hyping it up to St. Jimmy so much and I was nervous and excited for him to finally get to see Alice live!
The show was just as good as I remembered from all those years ago, with the fantastic theatrics behind every song, the great chemistry between the band members and Alice Coopers voice was still going strong!

As the stage filled with smoke the band played a part of ‘Lock Me Up’ before jumping into the perfectly named, ‘Welcome to the Show’ followed by ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’.
Alice Cooper played 25 songs with plenty of theatrics including murder, throwing blow up doll around the stage, a live snake, and being chased by a huge frankenstein during ‘Feed My Frankenstein’ and finally Alice being beheaded!
They played plenty of Alice’s older songs such as ‘Poison’, ‘I’m Eighteen’ and ‘Be My Lover’, not forgetting the solos at the end to showcase the talents of Nita Strauss on guitar, Chuck Garric from Beasto Banco on bass, Tommy Henriksen on guitar, Ryan Roxie on guitar and Glen Sobel on drums.
Finally the encore was ‘schools out’ where they added in an instrumental part of ‘Another Brick in a wall’ by Pink Floyd, perfectly combining the two songs about school to end such a fantastic show.
St. Jimmy and Rex 🖤☠️
