Alice Cooper – First Direct Arena Leeds UK

A perfect review for Halloween, Mr Alice Cooper! Our travels this week take us to the First Direct Arena in Leeds, a large venue with a 13781 capacity, hidden behind the bustling city. We think this is one of our favourite arenas for a seating gig as there was plenty of space in your seat, and it looked like it was a building designed for it! Even the furthest back seats were way closer than a lot of ‘close’ seating we have seen!

First Direct Arena lit up

Alice Cooper had two support bands joining him on this occasion, first on stage was The Meffs, a 2 piece punk band with Lily on guitar/vocals and Lewis on drums/backing vocals, they were absolutely fantastic! Their enthusiasm and raw energy would have been better suited to standing gig where you could join them dancing and really get into thier music, in our opinion!

The Meffs

With a pretty classic punk sound they definitely made fans of us, and even more so when they covered ‘Breathe’ by Prodigy! Although their set was short they still made an effort to chat to the crowd, where they got boo’d for being from Essex, which Lily responded saying “No one likes people from Essex”. We really enjoyed their set with the standout songs for us being ‘Broken Britain, Broken Brains’ and ‘Clowns’, we are looking forward to seeing what they do in the future and will hopefully see them live again, they are on tour in January so hopefully our calendar aligns with the dates. We did manage to get an interview with the duo, so keep a look out for that!

Primal Scream were the second support band of the night, and with a huge difference in band members from the duo previously, 9 people came on stage for Primal Scream, consisting of a guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist, 3 backing singers, a multi instrumentalist, and the glittery suit wearing, 63 year old lead singer Bobby!

The band started with playing a few of their newer songs including ‘Deep Dark Waters’ from their new album Come Ahead that’s being  released on November 8th, and ‘Jailbird’ where the lead singer tripped over a wire! Bobby grew up with an admiration for Don Revie, an ex Leeds United Manager, he even named a lot of their former players, this obviously got the crowd cheering along to ‘Movin’ On Up’ that he dedicated to the team.

Primal Scream

Primal Scream performed some of their biggest hits ‘Loaded’, ‘Country Girl’ and finished the set with ‘Rocks’ where the whole crowd sang along and clapped in unison, Although we thought that Bobby’s voice wasn’t once what it was, the instruments were played incredibly well and the back up singers made up any slack!

During the break we decided to go check out the merch where we bought a signed Alice Cooper vinyl of his latest album, Road. We also enjoyed the backing music that was playing in the arena so much so that I, St. Jimmy, chose one of the songs as my song for Last Week’s Tunes

I, Rex have seen Alice cooper before, and despite the many many concerts I have been to, still put Alice Cooper at the top of the best gigs! I had been hyping it up to St. Jimmy so much and I was nervous and excited for him to finally get to see Alice live!

The show was just as good as I remembered from all those years ago, with the fantastic theatrics behind every song, the great chemistry between the band members and Alice Coopers voice was still going strong!

Alice Cooper’s entrance

As the stage filled with smoke the band played a part of ‘Lock Me Up’ before jumping into the perfectly named, ‘Welcome to the Show’ followed by ‘No More Mr Nice Guy’.

Alice Cooper played 25 songs with plenty of theatrics including murder, throwing blow up doll around the stage, a live snake, and being chased by a huge frankenstein during ‘Feed My Frankenstein’ and finally Alice being beheaded!

They played plenty of Alice’s older songs such as ‘Poison’, ‘I’m Eighteen’ and ‘Be My Lover’, not forgetting the solos at the end to showcase the talents of Nita Strauss on guitar, Chuck Garric from Beasto Banco on bass, Tommy Henriksen on guitar, Ryan Roxie on guitar and Glen Sobel on drums.

Be My Lover – Alice Cooper (All Rights Retained By Alice Cooper)

Finally the encore was ‘schools out’ where they added in an instrumental part of ‘Another Brick in a wall’ by Pink Floyd, perfectly combining the two songs about school to end such a fantastic show.

St. Jimmy and Rex 🖤☠️

The Meffs sound like an awesome band. The second opener sounds like if Bob Dylan & The Rolling Stones had a baby… 😮 But you can’t beat Alice! 😀

They really were awesome! I’m excited to see them and dance along next time!

Hahaha! I love that comparison for Primal Scream, so fitting!

And we absolutely agree, Alice is the best!

I love Alice!! He’s from my home state 😊 I have literally been listening to him since Billion Dollar Babies. I was in third grade at the time. I had no idea what any of the songs were about, but I loved them anyway.

Oh wow! That’s amazing! Have you ever seen him live?

I remember listening to him a lot growing up, as my parents were big rockers, but it wasn’t until I watched Wayne’s World that I really started listening to him!

I didn’t get to see him live until 2019! I remember my brother and sister saw him in 1973, though. He played the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. ZZ Top was the warm-up band.

I saw Alice for the first time a few years ago (in the same week we saw two other concerts). Alice’s setlist was by far the longest. He puts on a great show. I really enjoyed his performance and was glad I finally got to see him.

Multiple concerts in a week is good going! We’ve done it a couple of times and we could tell we are getting older hahah!
He really does put in a great show, it’s so well choreographed and it seems there’s a lot of thought going into it!

Love the Coop. Last time I saw him the only thing he said was at the end of the show.
“You’re all sick things,” he said, waving away the crowd with his hands before walking away.

I always thought Alice Cooper was a fantastic rocker especially the classics like poison and amazing that he is now a Christian can reach so many young people. Great that he still can put on a rock show and entertain without going too far to dark side lols great article well done

He is a fantastic rocker and musician!

He is also from a very religious background, his father was an evangelist in the church of Jesus and his grandfather was a minister I think. So religion has always been there for him, I guess he just interpreted it differently!

I saw Cooper in a small venue in Upper Darby in Philly before I went to hell, errr, I mean college. The guy has that old sense of showmanship many bands just don’t possess. I’ll never forget those moments. Glad he is still presenting, and for Veronica’s sake, I hope he never stops.

It’s amazing that he still puts on an amazing show even at the age of 76! I don’t think there are many bands out there that come close to his showmanship.
