The next installment in our weekly Spotify Playlist “Song Of The Week” is here. This time we are joined by Turtle Skull with their song “Apathy”.

Song Explanation

Apathy came about really easily. A few weeks before recording it just appeared. I remember I was playing guitar and the chorus riff appeared and my partner Rachel ran into the room and was like “that’s a good riff, you gotta use it on the record!” We tried not to overthink it and slapped all the riffs together. It’s slightly different to the long form doom psych stuff. It’s meant to be upbeat, bombastic, in your face, full of fuzz. We went all in on the harmonies and the big chorus.

Charlie – Apathy was a last minute addition to the recording session. We were booked in to record in a couple of weeks and Dean and I were practicing, he showed me one of the riffs and next thing you know we had Apathy. We were so excited about it, we convinced the others to go with it in the studio and we tracked it live and it turned out to be one of the strongest TS songs yet.

It’s about how social media has diluted our collective empathy. It’s a brutal reminder to myself to live right now.

Dean – This album is quite different in approach, execution and style to what we’ve done in the past. We really wanted to explore some different ideas and styles on this record. It’s still got plenty of psych doom fuzz but it’s also got some shorter and more upbeat songs. We collected a bunch of songs and fragments of songs, some old and some brand new, and pulled them together to make quite a diverse record, but which also has sonic thematic and lyrical themes that tie the whole thing together. If there’s a concept for this record, it was to have no concept and just really focus in on each song and see what it needed. It’s also got some of our shortest songs – we finally cracked the 3 minute mark!

We are embarking on our biggest tour to date through November and December of 2024 in support of the new song. Hitting a bunch of places on the east coast of Australia. New merch will be up on our bandcamp as well.
