Introduction
All-girl rock band unpolished* hail from LA. They play a blend of punk/emo and alt rock. But if you listen closely enough you will also hear influences from metal and grunge. Today we take a close look at their recent song Ghost , which is a personal favourite of mine (Fox).
Review
Punk, punk, punk. That’s the immediate feel I get from the opening riffs. To be honest, I’m really feeling it. I also enjoy the drums in the intro. They almost start faded. Then, as the song progresses, they come into focus.
The vocal delivery is impressive, with clarity that perfectly captures the song’s edgy essence, allowing it to flow seamlessly. However, I feel it could benefit from a bit more emotional depth. Given the song’s emolike nature, a few extra hints of feeling in the vocals would have truly taken it to another level.
The song’s flow is quintessentially punk, and the instrumentally this is super tight! I can’t find any faults in the mixing either—fantastic work on that!

The lyrics of this song are incredibly clever, particularly in their use of metaphors. For example, likening a stalker to a ghost emphasizes the eerie sensation of knowing someone is present. Yet, you can’t see them.
Also, the line about kicking the stalker out as if they were in a relationship—“take your bags it’s time to go”—is brilliant. Stalkers often perceive themselves as being in a relationship with their victims due to their obsessive nature. Thus, on a psychological level, the lyrics truly translate and hit it out the park.
“You take a shovel and bury me where dreams go to die”.

The slight break in stride towards the end does provide that missing emotion for me vocally. I just wish there was more of it. I think the chorus could have had a slightly altered tempo. This change might have really highlighted it. Although, there is nothing really wrong with it.
The subtle shift in rhythm towards the end adds a touch of emotion. I feel this emotion is lacking in the rest of the track. I just wish there was a bit more of it. Additionally, I think the chorus could have a slight tempo change. This would truly emphasize its impact. The chorus doesn’t have any obvious flaws.
Finally there is a guitar solo that is really damn tasty as the track is reaching its crescendo. For a band called Unpolished , this track is anything but!
