Interview
What was it like playing in the Netherlands and Germany and what was your favourite place?
Devastator – It is hard to compare, playing Europe is a completely different animal to performing here in the United Kingdom. We have had many different performances that could be called our ‘favourites’, but one of the more recent ones was our performance at the Incineration Festival in London.
How did you come up with the band name?
Devastator – We simply picked it because it sounded cool to us, there is no real grand story behind it – sorry to disappoint!
What is your bands biggest song?
Devastator – That is not for us to say really, it’s for the fans to say – we’ve had a handful of successful singles. We recommend checking them out and deciding for yourselves! Start with “Black Witchery” from our latest album “Conjurers of Cruelty”.
Who designed the face paint?
Devastator – There is no ‘design’, it is purely what feels natural. The visual aspect of Black Metal goes hand in hand with the music and sound, it was purely natural for us to embrace an image that harked back to the genre’s roots.
What is the song writing process like? Does one person come up with the lyrics or is it a collective effort?
Devastator – The lyrics mostly come from frontman Nachtghul, but there have been contributions and suggestions from all in the band when it comes to the music and lyrics of Devastator.
What is your dream gig?
Devastator – There are many bucketlist shows that we have in mind, but we are slowly achieving them as we move further forward out of obscurity and into the forefront where we can no longer be ignored.
Conjurers Of Cruelty came out earlier this year , whats the reception been like for it ?
Devastator – Extremely positive across the board amongst fans and press alike, especially live. Nothing says a seal of approval like a beer swelling European metalhead guring and furiously headbanging to your music.
Whats your favourite song off the new album?
Devastator – The entire album is superb, but we have some bias of course.
If you could cover a song by any band in history what would it be and why?
Devastator – We have covered many tracks in our time, reasons for covers are not significant to us. We cover tracks we enjoy and that we feel suits the aesthetic and sound of Devastator.
If another band could cover one of your songs , who would it be and which song?
Devastator – That would be down to the other band surely? Perhaps Venom could cover one of our songs.
If you had to pinpoint one line of lyrics as being the best you have written , which line is it ?
Devastator – We are not sure it would be appropriate for your website, we do not have the most ‘family friendly’ lyrics. It’s a lot of blasphemy, darkness and bodily fluids being expursed onto deities of worship…
What is your favourite animal?
Devastator – The only real answer we can give here is goats, isn’t it?
Whats next for the band ? Any exciting news we can share , albums/tours etc?
Devastator – We head out to Europe on the BLACK WITCHERY OVER EUROPE tour in 3 days at the time of writing. We will be playing 8 dates in 10 days across central Europe in France, Belgium, Germany and Poland.
If you had to describe black thrash in a sentence what would it be ?
Devastator – The ugliest sound in the world.
