As the years changed so did my listening tastes. Start Me Up was and is a catchy tune.

Outlier, likely, but Paint It Black. Ten year old me would have said Satisfaction but that’s because I had mom’s 45 on hand and my exposure was rather limited at the time.

Well, let’s not get crazy here 😀

If she had her way, I’d be still playing easy listening and pop along the lines of Barry Manilow, Anne Murray and Disney musicals. She was appalled the first time she heard The Replacements and Husker Du blare out of my stereo as a kid. Sister of Mercy and the Cure nearly gave her a heart attack.

Paint it Black…but in truth, none of those. I was a rabid fan for over 35 years (1965-early aughts). By far, my favorite song is “Sympathy For The Devil” with “Let it Loose” and “Shine A Light” (or anything from Exile on Main St) as close seconds. I loved the non-commercial, bluesy, dark and brooding side of the Stones vs what got airplay.

“Gimme Shelter” is one of those songs that gets limited airplay that tickles my ear far more than the popular songs, so I’m with you there. I’m less of a rabid fan and more of a casual fan, however, so I hesitate to weigh in too much. I’ve been meaning to get around to losing the “casual” modifier for a while — maybe it is time to correct that.

No longer rabid, unfortunately…that changed with the new century…but there are tons of gems in their 20th century catalog. “Gimme Shelter” is another brilliant song. Have fun exploring!

PS–Their vinyl, along with Bowie’s, are the last remaining in my collection. Will never let go of either collection.

I can think of a few bands that I used to feel that way about that I can’t seem to muster up the same energy for in the new millennium. But I go to their back catalogs and feel the same energy as before and I’m learning to be good with that.

I am jealous about the Bowie vinyl, you know 🙂

It doesn’t get played, unfortunately, so my favorites are framed and adorn my walls 🙂 All have been replaced with CDs. It’s not the same, but I no longer have the space for a turntable and all the trappings.

I have always like Paint It Black. However, my all time top favorite is The Last Time, It was a song I embraced as a teenager and every time something in my life went wrong or did not work out I was at home blasting and chanting along to This will be the last time I know and my poor put upon mom would just sigh and roll her eyes.

Its lyrics are simply out of this world, its sound is so pulsating, I sit in my chair and dance. The concept of the song sung from the devil’s point of view is innovative like nothing else in rock, and it covers so much history. No other Stones song comes close to Sympathy for the Devil!
