Introduction
Secret Rivals are a four-piece Indie band with an edge that often flicks between pop and punk. They blend male and female vocals and focus on real emotion in their songs. Watch out for the use of 80’s synths too! This band should be firmly in the sights of fans of The Cranberries, The Wombats and Pixies.
Today we review “Ways” their latest EP. Take a look at the review , listen to the tunes and don’t forget to follow the band on all socials!

Review
Ataxia
The EP and track kick off with classic indie guitar riffs that harmoniously intertwine with synthesizers! Coupled with a solid driving beat, this song is incredibly catchy.
I spent some time trying to identify the female vocals and who they reminded me of…The Cranberries! But with a more playful twist so stylistically completely different!
This song transports me back to a time where I would spend days playing FIFA. The soundtracks were always filled with absolute Indie anthems and this would fit right in! It brings to mind tracks like “Jerk It Out” by the Caesars. Nowadays, it’s referred to as FC, but this song would still make a brilliant addition to those games.
“I’m not afraid of the dark, but im a little concerned about the speed of my heartbeat”.
If I could alter anything about this song, it would be to eliminate the backing vocals, as I don’t think they add much value. While I understand they are intended for contrast, there are times when they simply aren’t necessary. This track however is a fantastic way to launch an EP.
The Last Of My Letters
I really appreciate how her voice takes the spotlight right from the start of this track. The music has a vibe reminiscent of The Wombats, and there’s an cracking riff around the 40-second mark that the Indie feel.
The drums standout throughout this song to me, they bring a fresh element to the overall sound. This can especially be heard towards the end of the track. While I previously highlighted the backing vocals on the negative side of things , I must now give them their due credit. They significantly enhance the song’s depth!
I’ve Tried Everything
The drums in this track give off the feel of a marching band. While it may not be Eminem’s “Toy Soldiers,” for that it definitely has that vibe if we are focusing purely on the drums. What took me by surprise was the inclusion of the acoustic guitar—a delightful welcome addition! This song stirred up a whirlwind of emotions in me, reminiscent of the first time I listened to “Set Fire To The Third Bar” by Snow Patrol and Martha Wainwright.
I notice a significant difference in vocal quality between the two singers in this track. Perhaps it’s just my perspective, but her vocals are just on a completely different level. However, I must admit that this dynamic actually enhances the song, giving it a genuine conversation like feel.
Cassidy
I would characterize this song as fun yet tinged with a downbeat heart. Musically, it hits all the right notes, but I feel the lyrics fall flat for me, aside from that catchy chorus.
I believe the problem lies in the contrast between the cheerful instruments and the more serious vocals. I’m having trouble figuring out the intended purpose of this song.
Ways
I wasn’t prepared for the beginning of this track, which features a deliberately repetitive instrumental. But when the vocals kick in, they are truly outstanding!
“I’ve suffered way too much to change”.
I think this track showcases the incredible synergy between these two singers. As the song unfolds, it increasingly embraces the Indie vibe, while still incorporating guitar elements reminiscent of classic rock bands. The concluding note of the song, and indeed the entire EP, provides a sense of resolution and perfect closure.
Final Thoughts
One of my enduring reflections on this EP is how it evokes memories of some of the happiest times in my life. There’s an authentic feel-good vibe in the way this group approaches their music, even if the lyrics don’t always align with that sentiment. At times, I find myself wishing certain tracks featured only female vocals, but I appreciate the necessity of having that contrast. Overall, it’s a solid EP just lacking a couple more songs as great and as polished as Ataxia. I’m excited to see what they create next!
