What Is Your Favourite Rock Cover Song?

Now at the moment the singer of the band Disturbed is somewhat public enemy number 1. On this site we will not be covering that though, we just present the music. His actions do not take away how great of a cover this is.

Disturbed – The Sound Of Silence (All Rights Are Retained By Disturbed)

I am of course talking about Disturbed’s cover of “Sound Of Silence”. There is just something about the way David Draiman really goes at this song that does something for me. Like goosebumps every single time! I love how it starts really slow and sombre, before transforming into this really powerful song. His vocals on this are truly remarkable and I feel his harsh vocals really elevate this song to a new place.

    Oh, so many choices.

I really like Judas Priest’s cover of “Diamonds and Rust”, originally written and recorded by Joan Baez.

Also, the Clash’s cover of “I Fought the Law” is a classic cover song.

I had forgotten about the Judas Priest song! Thanks for the reminder 😁

Being a musical “purist,” I seriously dislike covers as a rule. But, that being said, Bauhaus (Peter Murphy) did an excellent cover of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust,” and Iva Davies did a great cover of Bowie’s “Heroes.”

So as a rule you don’t like covers unless it’s a Bowie song 😉 gotcha 😁

I have two, but the second may not be allowed.
    1. The recent Judas Priest “War Pigs.”
    2. Bruce Dickenson covering “The Phantom of the Opera” with Iron Maiden (and so it’s Maiden covering Di’anno’s version of Maiden.)

I always loved Melanie’s cover of ‘Ruby Tuesday’, and preferred it to the Stones’ original – and that’s saying something! It was the theme tune and part of the soundtrack to my teens, and still played regularly in my life. Time for another listen today! 😎

Always time for another listen 😁

Why do you think you preferred it to the orginal?

Being sung by a woman made it more personal to me, and to the singer, who put more feelings into it therefore. For the Stones it was a bunch of guys singing about the opposite sex, their perspective- not unsympathetic but at a remove nevertheless. 🙂

This is also one of my favorite cover songs of all times. There are some great ones who transform the song into their own style where the original song I am not crazy about.

    This one’s easy:

Guns and Roses: Live and Let Die

    Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower

    ‘Tallica: Whiskey in the Jar

    Goldfinger: 99 Red Balloons

Levellers: Devil Went Down to Georgia (or possibly Plastic Jesus)

Of course, when I say ‘easy’, I mean bloomin’ impossible

Disturbed does a great rendition of Sound of Silence. My favorite Rock song? That is a hard one. There is so much great music from so many different artists and bands. It really depends on my mood at the time, but I’d have to say either Stairway to Heaven or Hotel California are definitely in the running. But then anything Val Halen is too. 🙂

Does Chris Cornell’s cover of Nothing Compares To You and Billie Jean count. I still think he sang it better than MJ 😁.

Favorite cover by an artist who usually does original music: Careless Whisper by Seether. With all respect to the Sexy Saxophone Guy, those lyrics work so much better as dark rock than they do with easy listening.

Favorite cover by an artist that is primarily a cover band: Chasing Cars by First to Eleven. Already a great song, but they do it better than the original. Go listen right now. Audra can totally wail.
