New Rock Roundup Vol 7

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Good Charlotte – Stepper.

It is always nice to see one of your favourite bands releasing new music! Here Good Charlotte have created a bit of an earworm, that admittedly took me a couple of listens to really fully take in. But when I did I really appreciated the guitar in it.

Good Charlotte – Stepper (All Rights Are Retained By Good Charlotte)

Special Mention: Wisp – Breathe Onto Me.

Metal

GO!! Light Up! – Coral Crown.

There is just something about a song that is about mermaids luring people to their death on a boat… The singers voice is that good that I would probably be lured in. Excellent lyrics, great instrument playing. I love this. This is a cover, but there is no denying they elevate the song!

GO!! Light Up! – Coral Crown (All Rights Are Retained By GO!! Light Up!)

Special Mention: Dark Divine – Better Start Digging.

Metalcore

Atreyu – Bleeding Mascara.

Ok so technically this isn’t a new song… This is a rerelease of a 20 year old song. One that I absolutely adored when it first came out. This is the first single off a 20 year celebration album with the vocals now being handled by the bands bassist. The bands original singer has since left the band in 2020. This reimagining really is great, check it out!

Atreyu – Bleeding Mascara (All Rights Are Retained By Atreyu)

Special Mention: Of Truth – Addicted To Pain.

Punk

Panic Shack – Pockets.

Sometimes a punk song needs lots of fun to go alongside it! A song dedicated to pockets on jeans is rather hilarious. What is true though is that the song is raw punk at its finest , yet still rather catchy! Not to mention that the pocket complaints are something my wife moans about all the time…

Panic Shack – Pockets (All Rights Are Retained By Panic Shack)

Special Mention: Upchuck – Forgotten Token.

Pop Punk

You Know The Drill – Bone Idle.

Pop punk deliciousness! Being fairly local to me too means I really want these guys to succeed. This is a bit of an earworm, if you don’t want this stuck in your head, I’d probably only play it once. They show later in the track that its not just sticking to the formula, and its really bassy!

You Know The Drill – Bone Idle (All Rights Are Retained By You Know The Drill)

Special Mention: Swim Down – Hot New Nothing.

Alternative

Of Monsters And Men – Television Love.

The Icelandic gems just keep on getting it right! With beautiful vocals combined with serene soundscapes this is a bit of me. You need to check out their debut album if you have not already. The harmonies this band produces never fails to give me goosebumps.

Special Mention: Petey USA – Ask Someone Else.

Indie

Whitney – Dandelions.

When I first heard this song I thought I was listening to a long lost BeeGees song… The almost impossible sounding high vocals really suit the vibe they are going for. Max and Julien know how to make a song work! This is wonderful.

Whitney – Dandelions (All Rights Are Retained By Whitney)

Special Mention: King Princess – Cry Cry Cry.

Fox’s Ranking

1st Place: Of Monsters And Men

2nd Place: Whitney

3rd Place: Good Charlotte

4th Place: Bleeding Mascara

5th Place: GO!! Light Up!

Let us know if you agree with the ranking and the comments about each song!

That Panic Shack one is excellent! #1, Good Charlotte #2, Whitney #3 need further exploration on the others. I just can’t seem to enjoy Metalcore much though.

Well the fact you enjoyed 3 songs is great! 🙂 Yeah metalcore can be a rather polarising subgenre actually. Guessing it is the harsh vocals?
