Hidden away in the Avenues in Sneinton Market is The Grove, a tiny venue with a lot of character! Despite the size the acoustics were great both in and outside the building, the heat on the other hand was quite intense inside, especially once it fills up and people are dancing!
Although small, there was still a good selection of drinks at the bar that were reasonably priced, and a merch stand that was pretty well stocked with band meach and some venue t-shirts.
The first band of the night was Parallel States, a trio from Nottingham with a 90’s/00’s pop punk sound and look! Their chemistry together was great with lots of jokes and silliness that gave Blink 182 vibes, you could tell they enjoyed playing even though the Bassist was at work at 3am that morning driving busses.

They jokingly introduced themselves as Slackrr, while pointing to the banner behind them then jumped into playing including ‘TV Junkie’ and ‘Downpipe’ Thier look definitely matched their sound, and we really enjoyed them!
Our favourite song was ‘Girlz R Bad’ which also seemed to be a crowd favourite as everyone was dancing or singing to this one. We also seemed to be standing near the band’s friends and family which was awesome to see!

With enough time to get a drink and some air to cool down between sets, Amongst Thieves came on stage; the second band of the night. They started by introducing themselves and telling us they were from near Leeds, before beginning their set.
They played ‘The Silence’, ‘Lifeline’ and ‘Gospel’ which got the place rocking, the setlist including a new song with the name yet to be announced which is something we’ll look forward too.
They were the heaviest band of the night with primarily screamo vocals. The lead singer was walking around the crowd and singing right into the audience, this really showed the intimacy of the venue and made it a different experience.

The third band of the night was another heavy screamo band called Keep This Up, they also had a high energy vocalist who was walking through the crowd, jumping off the stairs and swinging his microphone around while performing!
As well as the vocalists the bassist was also jumping around on the tiny stage, we love it when the band dances along to their own music and thought these guys would be great on a larger stage where they could really show their energy!
Keep This Up played some of their most popular songs such as ‘Blossom’ and ‘Fire Bottle’ as well as a few unreleased songs and a couple of covers including ‘Hollaback Girl’
The headliner band of tonight was Slackrr a pop punk band who we last saw in Derby last year, you can read that post here.
They have a new album ‘A Light On The Horizon’ coming out august 1st which is their first on vinyl!

We had a good chat with Scotty (Lead singer and guitarist) before the show, we told him we have pre ordered their new album on vinyl and asked if they could sign it for us next time we go and see them, which he happily agreed to!
Slackrr performed some of our favourites ‘Holding On’ and ‘Save Your Breath’ along with two of their latest singles ‘Never Forget’ and ‘Better Days’. The show was full of people dancing with great banter between songs from the band.
Scotty talked about how grateful they are for people coming to see them and how important the music community is before finishing with an encore with our favourite song ‘Playing With Fire’ which the crowd joined in.
Slackrr are a band that are constantly on the road touring the country and going across into Europe including playing festivals in Austria and Slovenia, we would recommend you go see them if you get the chance!
We all enjoyed all the bands and the energy they bought was a night of great music and it flowed very well from band to band.
Overall it was a great night of music with a bunch of talented people, we hope to see these bands again and see what they do in the future.
