How Do You Feel About Bands Dramatically Changing Their Sound?

This is a tricky one. I think rather selfishly it depends on the band and also what I thought to the sound for that band in a particular time period. The band I will use to explain this is Bring Me The Horizon.

Bring Me The Horizon – Pray For Plagues (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

The band started well and truly in the Deathcore subgenre. Debut album “Count Your Blessings” was a sound that typically I find a little bit too heavy. Yeah that’s not even something I am embarrassed to share. Their sound was raw and put many off (and it sometimes was not even the sound doing this…).

Bring Me The Horizon – Chelsea Smile (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

By the time their second album “Suicide Season” came around I had somewhat warmed to the band. With the song “Chelsea Smile” starting to form a bit of an earworm in my head. I think it was the shift toward mixed vocal stylings as well as my musical complexity.

Bring Me The Horizon – Alligator Blood (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

The crazy long titled “There Is A Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven Let’s Keep It A Secret” continued this more melodic progression, and brought with it my favourite song by the band “Alligator Blood”. It was still missing something though, that spark to truly set the band apart from others in the same space.

Bring Me The Horizon – Can You Feel My Heart (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

Step forward the most well rounded and as far as I am concerned the best version of Bring Me The Horizon. An album that finally broke the charts and catapulted the band to a really big listener base. “Sempiternal” (Yes I do sing sandpit turtle) was the bands most commercially successful album at the time.

With much more melodic elements and a subtle electronic theme running through it. Lyrically it is the real start to the band getting deeper with what they are writing about too. With choir elements and just a bigger sense to their music , this step to finally embracing the metalcore band they always should have been was complete.

Bring Me The Horizon – Throne (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

Or at least it should have been… 2015 Album “That’s The Spirit” was definitely still more than listenable, with the electronic elements taking even more of a centre piece to their sound. Almost too much though , with all harsh vocals pretty much being left out the band in the most part felt flat.

Bring Me The Horizon – MANTRA (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

2019’s “amo” Was the sort of album that your non rock loving friend would bring over to you and claim they are finally into rock music… It had some ok moments, but lyrically to me it felt somewhat lazy, with an eye too much on the charts and not the music.

Bring Me The Horizon – Parasite Eve (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

The something happened… Was it the declining sales? The 2020 album “Post Human: Survival Horror” started to feel a little bit heavier again, the music but not always the vocals. That was enough though my interest was yet again peaked. The inclusion of rap elements was something I didn’t think I would enjoy but it worked. Also they managed to make me enjoy a track with Babymetal on it which tbh I think are an industry plant.

Bring Me The Horizon – liMOusine ft Aurora (All Rights Are Retained By Bring Me The Horizon)

Post Human: Nex Gen , is what I would decribe as their truly experimental album. With some really amazing songs on it and then some terrible ones. I am intrigued where the band goes in the future but to be honest the closer it is to Sempiternal the better. Here is hoping anyways!

Sigrid ft Bring Me The Horizon – Bad Life (All Rights Are Retained By Sigrid ft Bring Me The Horizon)

Tell you what though I really love the pop/metal collaboration between Sigrid and Bring Me The Horizon! Let me know in the comments what you think to when bands completely change their sound!

If bands can pull if off it can be really cool, but I think they are I also think they are taking a big risk of losing their fan base if they can’t pull if off.

Can you think of any bands who have done this successfully ?

I think Queen has done it. Certainly Metallica and Styx when they play with the symphony orchestras. Rod Stewart, Sting. Those are the only ones that really come to mind.

As a writer I know it can take a few books before we find our own particular style – we only develop this through practice and experimentation, and I’m sure it’s the same for the other arts. Picasso had his ‘Blue period’ and other styles, including Cubism, and so it must be for music – but it’s 3am and I’m struggling to think of a favourite band of mine that did so. I’ll have to get back to you on that. 😎

I think you might be right , perhaps it is the 3rd or 4th album we should take a look of for bands , rather than the first couple, or later when they go off the rails looking for experimentation

For some bands it doesn’t make sense. AC/DC hasn’t changed much over the past fifty years or so and it suits them. Other bands, like Rush, have changed quite a bit and it works for them, too. I guess it depends on the band, what they’re trying to achieve, and if their fan base is open to it.

Yeah i think a lot has to be said about the fan base and how malleable they are. AC/DC though im not sure they didnt change at all between the vocallists, maybe it was subtle but i think the song writing changed.

LOL…yeah, vocally they moved an inch or so. But I agree, their sound didn’t really change over the years, but they did become better songwriters with more intricate guitar parts.

Like when bands you don’t expect come out with power ballads suddenly and some of them are really awesome. Like did I expect Every Rose Has Its Thorne from Poison – no but then it happened and blew me away.

Poison blew everyone away with that one I think! 🙂

If they are searching and growing musically, like The Beatles did, I like it. I wasn’t too crazy about Chicago’s new sound when they changed back in the 80’s though…

I think you’re right , is it for musical experimentation , or to try and sell more albums etc chasing money and fame over the music.

Sometimes, if you’re a fecking genius, like John and Paul, you get both…
