Dio-era Sabbath – three great albums, greatest metal vocalist ever, best riffs
Metallica – my first metal band, and the band that got me back into metal after 20 years
Ozzy Black Sabbath – still love them

It’s the voice along with Iommi’s riffs and Geezer’s bass, can’t be beaten (though I love a lot of his Rainbow and solo stuff too)

Black Sabbath was the first band my parents hated, but Metallica took it to the loathing level, so I’ll have to go with James and the boys. Sorry, Ozzy.

Metallica, for sure. Simply because they are part of my personal history and are still my all time favorites. James Hetfield’s impressive vocal range and the powerful instruments are only some of the elements that contribute to this.

On the whole, Metallica. I like more of their songs and have more albums, but Black Sabbath can get it on occasion…

Although Metallica has more songs and a longer trajectory, the impact of Black Sabbath was stronger and more important in the development and continuity of Heavy Metal.

‘Tallica. No doubt here. I’ll admit to knowing very little Sabbath, but I’m not all that impressed by Paranoid or the really in actuality very poor Iron Man. War Pigs I know mostly from the Faith No More cover – it’s alright but I can’t forgive rhyming ‘masses’ with ‘masses’. I mean, it’s not even funny.

I’ll happily accept that Sabbath are foundational (though The Kinks and even Slade would like words), but to actually listen to? Metallica all the way.

I’ll even through in my provocation of the day: Reload is their best album *runs for cover*

I mean, I’d go with Death Magnetic, and I can certainly see Master, but it’d take a damn fine argument to convince me of any others. Is it really so wrong to rate Carpe Diem Baby, Fixxer and Prince Charming? Be thankful – I could have said St Anger…

Lol, Lulu has slipped past causing barely a ripple in my consciousness. But it seems certain that, with all the hate that’s poured onto it, that it’ll be ‘rediscovered’ and declared a cult classic in twenty years

Sabbath for their monolithic and thunderous intent. They have a focus and power than is lost in Metallica’s ornate and theatrical soloing. It’s the primitive thrust over the sophisticated layering of sound for me.
