This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.
The Album Breakdown
The self titled Slipknot album just sneaks into this feature with its release being 1999. That being said it really does deserve its place! Bringing Nu-metal to new heights with their blend of death metal and industrial metal thrown in.
The band have 9 members (yes that is a lot) as well as being known for their aggressive drum layerings, as well as turntables and harsh and clean vocals. This debut was both a breakthrough for them but also a shock to the system of mainstream metal music. And we have not even touched on those creepy masks!
Highlight Tracks
Wait and Bleed was the bands breakout single and demonstrated to the world their ability to create a balance between creativity and chaos. While the clean vocals in the chorus create that little bit of mainstream appeal , the verses are aggressive, and punch you in the face. As a song it captures what the band are about to perfection.
Corey Taylor’s quick vocals draws from rap culture yet is paired with the aggression found in metal. On the album it stands out by itself as a slightly different style. The song doesn’t give the listener chance to catch their breath. This really does show off the turntables in the bands music far more than a lot of other songs.
