“Back To Me” sits at the intersection between post-hardcore and melodic metal. It’s punchy, emotionally charged and the production makes the most of the pop like vocal hook. “Back To Me” delivers a dynamic blend of tension, atmosphere, and emotional power from the very first 20 seconds. Starting with an ambient, electronic backdrop which then sets the tone for a punchy and explosive opening verse.
The drums stand out to me as one of the strongest elements. Zestful, driving, and expansive without ever overwhelming the rest of the songs elements. The bass is very complimentary to the drums, and together they provide a solid foundation that the track is built around.
I love that the vocals feature an unmistakable Scottish accent, while it is much less prominent than bands like Biffy Clyro or Twin Atlantic, it still gives the music a real distinctive personality. The vocal delivery does a great job of balancing raw emotion with melody, especially during the chorus, which serves as the song’s emotional centrepiece. While I think the backing vocals can verge on overpowering at moments, they do still add something to the sound. I just wish it was turned down a notch or two in places.
The rhythmic chug of the guitars through the verses keep things moving before, giving way to powerful chord progressions in the chorus. This is actually really smart as it allows the vocals to breathe in the verses for extra clarity while lifting everything a layer in the chorus.
Lyrically, the track explores themes of inner struggle and emotional turmoil, showcased in the songs very first line!
“Feeling lost, feeling broken, like I’m stranded in the ocean.”
The inclusion of harsh vocals, introduce a compelling metalcore edge to the song. Their rawness intensifies the emotional impact and hints at the band’s heavier influences. I think I would have included even more of these as they act as a real counterbalance to the pop laden chorus. This would have really amped up the emotion too!
