What Is The Best Song By Alice In Chains

Fox’s Recommendations

I feel like “Man In A Box” is the track that really put Alice In Chains on the map as one of the cornerstones of Grunge. The song is heavy, with plenty of sludge on the riffs. When this is combined with those unmistakable vocals the result is raw emotion and darkness.

I also really love the talkbox guitar effect from Jerry Cantrell it adds a mechanical style edge to the song. This really is one of the most recognised Grunge songs out there!

Now then “Rooster” focuses much more on reflecting and is far more emotional than most of their other tracks. It showcases real depth way beyond just having heavy riffs. The song is actually about Jerry Cantrell’s fathers experience in Vietnam and that brings with it that real personal connection.

Fox’s Wildcard

While “Nutshell” was never released as a single it has always been loved by hardcore fans of the band. It has a fragile quality to it that makes it beautiful. The lyrics lay bare for all to see isolation, addiction and emotional struggle. The vocals give me goosebumps every time.

Hmm. Out of the three I’d go for Nutshell. Like the band a lot and would like to raise a voice for Them Bones, which has the production that I’d say Man in the Box lacks, and also God Am. Think their ‘tripod’ album is really overlooked. Could add Frogs, Again… actually, just looking at the track listing means I have to listen to it again!

This is such a hard choice. All three albums are spectacular. If I had to pick one song, I’d chose Man in a Box. My personal favorite is Would.

I really hate being “mainstream,” but I have to go with their iconic “Man In A Box.” That song brought me happily into the world of grunge. Because of this introduction, I opened my ears to other grunge artists and learned to love the genre.

Such a good question! My favorite has always been “Down in a Hole,” but specifically the Unplugged version. Staley’s voice, the power of it, is so beautiful and even tragic in the larger context of his state at the time.

This is a hard choice. The best songs by AIC are also the most harrowing in nature: hate to feel, god smack, head creeps, etc. AIC used music as therapy. They suffered from something, or many things, and they gave vent to it in music. The most negative and best grunge band.

Don’t Follow is one of my favorites! And the Got Me Wrong – Layne’s voice live on that one gives me chills every time I hear it. Mad Season had some bangers too, but I might be letting my love of his vocals creep in too deep.

Admitted Layne lover here, and gotta say Don’t Follow is one of the best songs. Ever! And Got Me Wrong (live) gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Layne’s voice is hauntingly dramatic. Gotta shout out Mad Season, too. They had some bangers!

Man In the Box is…great, it’s probably my favorite but I’m not sure that means its the best. Nutshell is awesome too. I’ll add Bleed the Freak and though it’s just instruments, Whale & Wasp b/c that guitar just…
