A-Z Of Rock: S Part 1

Welcome to our weekly alphabet themed rock post! In this post we will talk about a specific letter of the alphabet and associate it with all things rock music!

This will include a band with that letter, a song as well as a rocker. There is an accompanying playlist so that the selected songs can be enjoyed! Click the Spotify link below and remember to save it!

Band

Who’d have thought masked Iowa band Slipknot would have made as much of an impact on the world of metal that they have. Their chaotic live performances and mix of aggression, rhythm and melody brough metal back into the mainstream.

Slipknot – Before I Forget (All Rights Are Retained By Slipknot)

Song

If you do not know the riff from this song then you are either 1 years old or a liar. It tells the story of a fire during a Frank Zappa concern while in Switzerland. It is a cornerstone of classic rock!

Deep Purple – Smoke On The Water (All Rights Are Retained By Deep Purple)

Rocker

Steven Tyler is about as charismatic of a frontman as you get in rock. His signature raspy voice and amazing stage presence helped define hard rock.

Aerosmith – Cryin’ (All Rights Are Retained By Aerosmith)

Fun semi-related fact: the Barenaked Ladies song “The Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel” (I might be getting the title a little wrong) is about a car crash, and the lyrics say somethin about “slow motion Walter, the fire engine guy.” That phrase originated with a famous mis-heard lyric, someone’s incorrect hearing of “smoke on the water, fire in the sky.”

I never really got Slipknot, though I’m happy to accept that the problem lies with me! Agree that SotW is one of the most famous riffs ever. Love Aerosmith too, so all happy here. But… Can I just sneak in a little love for Stiltskin? I know, I know, a career based on a jeans ad is destined to be short. But their sole album is bloody great and deserves a lot better. And no-one deserves to be remembered as the ‘other’ Genesis singer!
