Sound Of The Sirens – The Pit @ Newstead, Nottingham UK

For today’s review we travelled to The Pit @ Newstead in Nottingham. The Pit is a micro pub nestled in the ex-mining village of Newstead known for its intimate gigs and good vibes offering a great selection of real ales and local brews. Next door to a train station with regular trains from Nottingham and Mansfield, making this location easy to access the country side and the picturesque Newstead Abbey, it is truly a great place to experience a show.

We were here to see Sound of the Sirens, a folk duo from exeter made up of Abbe Martin & Hannah Wood, both of whom are amazing vocalists and play a variety of instruments between them including guitar, mandolin, bass drum, snare drum, tambourine and piano, making these 2 extremely talented. When we got into the venue it was full, soon realising that it was sold out, and in a fully seated venue, we struggled to find a place to sit! Luckily we could move some seats so we could sit together, and get a better view to enjoy the show.

Sound of the Sirens opened up to the sold out crowd with ‘Who You Are’ & ‘These Are The Days’ with the latter being their “happiest song”, which the crowd really enjoyed. Throughout the night they spoke to the crowd and made a lot of jokes, these two were really funny which made the night even more enjoyable.

They continued to entertain with ‘Coming Back’ from their new album, ‘All That I Can Find’ & ‘Every Time’, the crowd enjoyed every song and laughed at every joke throughout, with 99% of the jokes being about Abbe and Hannah.

Half way through the set they took and break, where everyone went to the bar and the merchandise table, a lot of people purchased their new album and we purchased all five of their albums on vinyl, which they kindly signed for everyone, they were so grateful that they gave us a free set of their pin badges which was a lovely touch and made our night more special.

After the break they performed ‘The Part Where You’re Gone’ where they told us about the stop motion music video they made for this song, they had so much making it, even though Hannah was struggling to get the hang of not moving when she wasn’t supposed to. You can check out the music video on YouTube.

As the night went on we watched in amazement as they played multiple instruments and sang all at once, they performed ‘Forgiven’, ‘Winter’s Song’, ‘Home’ ‘Song For Sulli’ and finishing with ‘The Hope that we sailed on’ where it ended with a big applause from the crowd.

We went into this show blind and not really knowing much about folk music, but we thoroughly enjoyed their show and would recommend anyone to go see them. We will definitely start paying attention to folk music more and can’t wait to get through their albums, we hope to see these two very talented people perform again and can’t wait to see what they do in the future.
