Introduction
Based in Melbourne, Australia, The Maggie Pills bring a distinctly multicultural edge, with members also hailing from Argentina and Venezuela. Their fierce post-punk/alternative sound crackles with urgency, never afraid to fuse raw punk energy with dark, gritty atmospherics that hit hard and linger long after. As is often the case we got the low down on this band from the legendary Dingir Zu! So give them a follow for more brilliant tips.
Review
The track starts of on a strong footing with a deep pulsating bass, intertwined with the drums causing me to be fully immersed. With the right listening setup, the low-end feel feels absolutely huge. Entering together the guitar and vocals are effective with the guitar coiling around the vocals like a spider spinning its web. I found this to be unsettling but in the best way.
Speaking of the vocals they are delicate, yet haunting. At times they honestly feel like something a possessed doll would do in a horror film. Lines in the lyrics such as “As I Come Undone” act as an emotional link which only deepens the atmosphere created.

Around the 47 second mark the guitar takes on this addictive tone, I have listened to it multiple times and plan on doing so even more post review! The gothic nature (as the title suggested) is worn proudly and unapologetically on the skin like a tattoo. Lyrically it is compelling and well crafted. Being focused on wanting something so desperately, while at the same time doing anything you can to self-sabotage. This can be heard in “Choosing thorns over roses”.
The gritty atmosphere is the real star here, while vocals and hooks are strong, it’s the full picture that is created that keeps pulling you back in. This is a song that you will want to revisit time and time again. Even if it might be a slow burn.
Fans of straight up, radio polished rock might find this not to be their thing, and to that I say BORING! If you’re looking for rock dressed up in a pop shell, then this is not for you. The distortion, tension and uneasy underbelly is what makes this song so engaging. While it’s a strong standalone single, it becomes something larger when considered alongside the other songs on “Hearts Enduring Lingering Loss”. It fits into the emotional picture without getting lost.
