New Rock Roundup Vol 36

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Dead Pony – Eat My Dust!

One of the hottest bands out there at the moment! Which really clever use of instrumentation, electronics and that damn voice! They have a real knack of writing catchy lyrics as well as hooks. Sky’s the limit.

Metal

Alter Bridge – Disregarded.

The start of this song is much heavier than I’m used to on a Alter Bridge record. It’s that riff that really hooked me into before the typically amazing lyrics of Myles Kennedy. Tremonti however is the star on this track on the guitar!

Alter Bridge – Disregarded (All Rights Are Retained By Alter Bridge)

Metalcore

Poppy – Time Will Tell.

This won’t be for everyone. But I really enjoy the electronic elements alongside Poppy’s angelic voice, especially in the chorus. The chorus pushes things a little bit more and shows off her voice. Naturally the screams are what fully win me over though, despite them being much more subdued on this track. There is still that menacing undertone in the instruments throughout though. Like at any moment it could drop into gear.

Punk

Wasted Youth Club – Lights Out.

For a punk song this is remarkably melodic, playful and catchy. That speaks for everything about this track, every instrument and vocals take on that message. In places it almost escapes the punk stereotype style before crashing back into it.

Wasted Youth Club – Lights Out (All Rights Are Retained By Wasted Youth Club)

Pop Punk

Meet Me @ The Altar – Live Without.

I really enjoy the flow on this song, it’s naturally got the pop-punk direction, but does deviate here and there. The singers voice is really pleasing to me too.

Meet Me @ The Altar – Live Without (All Rights Are Retained By Meet Me @ The Altar)

Alternative

Violet Grohl – Applefish.

Ok so this song is genuinely beautiful! Now mix in the odd little bit of grunge and alt rock here and there and you have a melancholy hit… I’d expect nothing less by the daughter of legendary rocker Dave. This stands alone though, she is not living off her Fathers name at all.

Violet Grohl – Applefish (All Rights Are Retained By Violet Grohl)

Indie

Mumford & Sons – The Banjo Song.

My wives famous band! I don’t think I have ever featured Mumford & Sons on the site before either. Their folk/indie sounds are always a light refresher away from the heavier tunes I often partake in. This is bound to be to lots of peoples taste. Give it a go!

Mumford & Sons – The Banjo Song (All Rights Are Retained By Mumford & Sons)
