New Rock Roundup Vol 42

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Nickelback – Bones For The Crows.

In typical fashion Nickelback have managed to piece together something that feels both powerful and meaningful. I think Chad’s voice has a massive impact on that. In the verses its relaxed before hitting you in the face with extra power on the choruses. I need to speak about the riff’s during the chorus though which is the highlight of the song, sublime.

Metal

Bilmuri ft A Day To Remember – Always Let You Down.

This is an odd one for me. A band I have no exposure to att all in Bilmuri and a band which I have seen around 6 times in A Day To Remember. The combination is addictive. With cracking instrumentation, team work and a real focus on producing something amazing. Bilmuri is a band that I know I will pay more attention to moving forward. Especially if their other songs are anywhere near as catchy as this!

Metalcore

Maelfoy – Dear Jane Doe.

Straight out the gates the band bring this polished metal vibe, with a hint of electronic elements. Vocally its soft and flows really well. However flow is the real star here in how they blend the sung vocals into the harsh screams. Those screams are not overdone, instead used entirely to add emphasis. The more times I listen to this the more I enjoy it, which is always a sign of a well put together song.

Punk

Zebrahead – Burn Burn Burn.

A band I saw at Slam Dunk last year, yet never really looked into beyond the surface level. I was wrong to do that, the fast paced nature is really damn effective. This is somewhere between metalcore, pop-punk and punk, so while I struggled to pick a spot for it it 100% needed one!

Zebrahead – Burn Burn Burn (All Rights Are Retained By Zebrahead)

Pop Punk

Sleeping With Sirens – An Ending In Itself.

The highest male voice in rock. Kellin Quinn and the gang are back with an earworm and a half. That high pitched voice is going to put some point off, but I find that is balances really well against the harder instruments.

Sleeping With Sirens – An Ending In Itself (All Rights Are Retained By Sleeping With Sirens)

Alternative

Violet Grohl – 595.

I had to stick this in alternative as I am still yet to decide what genre it actually is. It’s somewhere between alt rock and grunge. The melancholic tone amongst very well done instrumental elements make this a really fun listen. Yes you know the last name. Yes she is his daughter. But that does not mean she isn’t absolutely fantastic!

Violet Grohl – 595 (All Rights Are Retained By Violet Grohl)

Indie

As It Is – Marilyn.

It isn’t all that often that a band moves from the UK to the USA. It is even rarer I would say that they would move to Minneapolis! What they bring is this bright reflective sound that is a little folk like but indie too. Marilyn is a scorcher of a song and one I really love.

As It Is – Marilyn (All Rights Are Retained By As It Is)
