New Rock Roundup Vol 48

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Voila – Tightrope Walker.

This duo know how to structure a song. With a voice that at times hits this wonderful high place. They have just the right amount of effects added too. Sometimes a duo struggles with filling out a song, the Dorset UK pair are not one of those.

Metal

SKARS – Just Like Me.

I could listen to this song so many times, sure that is helped by the fact it is only 90 seconds long… I love the deep riffs on show here alongside real playfulness. Vocally this is softer than I was expecting but I enjoy it and I think you will too!

SKARS – Just Like Me (All Rights Are Retained By SKARS)

Metalcore

Windwaker & RinRin – Click.

This is more electronic that I would prefer, but that chorus is fantastic! With rap flow in some of the lyrics and many effects it contrasts with the harsh vocals well too.

Windwaker & RinRin – Click. (All Rights Are Retained By Windwaker & RinRin)

Punk

Plague Vendor – Unc.

Just over 90 seconds of hardcore punk for you. High paced, crazy lyrics and in general fun even at this level of aggression. I think if it had been longer it would not have been as effective. Seriously the bit about taxes is hilarious…

Plague Vendor – Unc (All Rights Are Retained By Plague Vendor)

Pop Punk

Why Us – We Know What You Did.

For saying the less harsh nature of pop-punk I am surprised more female led bands don’t exist. Why Us have the formula nailed, with all the things you love from other pop-punk bands. Fun, lyrics that are light-hearted and delivered in a fun way. This is not going to offend anyone.

Why Us – We Know What You Did (All Rights Are Retained By Why Us)

Alternative

Muse – Cryogen.

At this point Muse have a formula, and it’s really bloody successful! Matt’s voice, especially the higher end is really effective in this song. With the chorus not pushing new ground, but lovers of Muse are going to add this to their top 20 songs easily. This new album should be good!

Muse – Cryogen (All Rights Are Retained By Muse)

Indie

The Great Leslie – King Beard Man.

A little bit fuzzy, a really cool voice and in general a really cool vibe! This band have great cross genre appeal and I have no doubt they could support both pop and rock acts. The chorus is really fun and the guitar is surprisingly amazing.

The Great Leslie – King Beard Man (All Rights Are Retained By The Great Leslie)
