From The Archives: 80s Vol 7 – Motorhead – Ace of Spades

This is “From The Archives” a feature where we take a trip back to a previous decade and discuss an album! We will talk about highlight tracks that should not be missed. As well as reasons why we think the album was so influential and successful.

The Album Breakdown

The fourth album by Motorhead solidified their reputation is the loudest, fastest and most uncompromising bands of their generation! Released in 1980 Ace Of Spades followed on from the success of Overkill and Bomber with an album that saw raw speed and aggression morph into something much more focused.

Fronted by the legend that is Lemmy the album fits somewhere between metal, punk and pure rock and roll. It captured the band at full speed while also allowing each instrument space to fully thrive.

It was a total commercial breakthrough moment that no doubt inspired bands for many years afterwards and to this day! It’s dirty and completely unapologetic!

Highlight Tracks

The best riff in all of rock history, ok I am biased as it is my favourite song ever but still that relentless energy get me every time! Lemmy’s vocals and rapid bass drive the song forward like a runaway train. Lyrically focused on gambling it captures the bands outlaw image to a T. Check the sites tagline…

Motorhead – Ace Of Spades (All Rights Are Retained By Motorhead)

A groove laden track that some might not have expected, it blends rock with metal intensity still though. The rhythm section keeps momentum flowing while the naughty lyrics showcase the bands funny side even behind the aggression.

Motorhead – Love Me Like A Reptile (All Rights Are Retained By Motorhead)

In a contrast to the albums opening track this leans much more into the blues side of the band. It highlights that Motorhead are still classic rock while not shying away from their rawness. It shows they are far more than bang and clash.
