It’s the time of the week that we highlight one of our favourite new releases. This time its The Memo by Joker’s Flight. Read a little about the song in the band’s own words!
Song Background Information
The Memo is the lead single from Joker’s Flight—a unique father-and-son duo. While John provides the lyrical voice, 15-year-old Samuel performs almost every instrument on the record, from Hammond organ to drums.
Blending the hazy textures of psychedelic folk-rock with a raw, uncompromising message, The Memo, serves as part protest, part story-song. The delivery and lyrics are infused with the fury the narrator feels regarding what may one day be viewed as one of the most corrupt governments history has ever witnessed. It is a song for the disillusioned, the seekers, and those who refuse to look away.
Written over a number of years, “The Memo” began after a reading of Rage by Bob Woodward. The song features several different characters as a way of exploring the emotional struggles people face when looking at the state of the world while trying to focus on what truly matters. Among them is Lazarus—a figure drawn from the writer’s own history on the stage, but one who also echoes the biblical theme of rising again and the moral weight of Victor Laszlo from Casablanca, a man forced to make an impossible choice.
For the writers, the overarching focus is the continuing journey of trying to be the best person you can be—especially to those who love you. The song asks how we can find the things that bind us through shared humanity rather than those that divide us, ultimately suggesting that one of the greatest forces for good in this world is music.
