Gnome – Duke Of Disgrace – Review

Introduction

Today we review the song “Duke Of Disgrace” by Belgian band Gnome. While they have a funny sounding name they are to be taken very seriously indeed! Riff’s are the order of the day.

Gnome – Duke Of Disgrace (All Rights Are Retained By Gnome)

The track opens with this riff that immediately grabs (and deserves) your attention. The accompanying drum roll is a fantastic way to kick the track into life too. Setting an early energetic tone. Instrumentally speaking this song in general is a really strength.

The bassist deserves particular praise in how it quietly comes into its own in the vocal passages, adding texture but not overpowering the mix. Equally as impressive is the drumming giving the song that drive forward and a couple of creative flourishes along the way.

The vocals for me however are a bit more of a mixed bag. The chorus is a highlight of the song, confidence shining through and memorable. But the verses feel disconnected in comparison. Delivered in isolation each line, it is like the singer was told to sing it under threat of violence. It really kills the natural flow for me.

The welcome change of pace half way through the song leads to a more experimental section that somehow doesn’t feel out of place at all. It is these little moments that prevent a track from becoming predictable.

I do love however the vocal distortion as the song moves towards its climax. That filthy tone (I mean that in a good way) works brilliantly for me and gives the song that lived in quality. Imagine a alcohol fuelled night out in Antwerp that sort of vibe.

While the band mixes doom, prog and stoner the latter two are where this song is for me. Backed by strong musicianship this is a solid track that delivers. But with a few tweaks could have scored much higher.
