Interview Text

As tradition demands—where did the band name come from? Are you aware of what comes up when you search the band’s name on search engines (breast pumps)?

Christo: I wanted to have a moon theme because I f*cking love the moon, and Gerry just started reading off words to come after Luna. We landed on Motif, and we did not know about the breast pump.

Gerry: So we see the breast pump as an added bonus.

Christo: Actually, if somebody from the breast pump company sees this, we’d be open to a partnership and we’d be happy to sell the breast pumps to any pregnant ladies that come to our gigs.

Gerry: And we’ll sign them as well.

Could you all introduce yourselves? Who are you, and what role do you play in the band?

Gerry: I’m Gerry. I’m the lead guitarist of the band, one of the original members. There’s not a lot to say about me. I’m originally from Dundalk, so I’m not a Dubliner—just a bit of a culchie blow-in. I like evening walks and romantic poetry.

Jason: Hi, I’m Jason. I’m the drummer. I’m one of the newer members of Luna Motif. I’ve been drumming for a long time and played in a few bands, but this is the one I really want to be in.

Adrien: I’m Adrien—or Adrien, because I come from France, so you pick. I’m the bassist and backing vocalist. I joined last year and it’s been a lot of fun. I also play Dungeons and Dragons and I’m a gamer.

Christo: I’m Christo—vocalist, lyricist, lunatic, frontman. I love to sing. I’m a bit of a nutcase, psychedelic dude that loves mushrooms, and I’m intentionally planting mystical seeds in our songs.

You have a new EP coming out soon—what’s it called, and what is the band aiming to say with this release?

Christo: The name is Shapeless Pursuits.

Gerry: Writing and recording this EP made it clear how much our sound has matured. Earlier releases weren’t bad, but this feels fuller and more complete.

Every second of the music had to fight for its life. Nothing was just stream of consciousness—everything was considered and placed carefully. Bridges, solos, choruses—all of it fits together.

We took extreme care during recording, and I think it brought us to a more professional level. The feedback so far has been phenomenal, so I’m really excited to see what people think.

Christo: The EP is about what it means to be human. You can feel anger one moment and joy the next.

The funkier parts make you want to dance and appreciate simple things—nature, the stars, life itself. It’s about deeper appreciation and authenticity.

We were much more intentional this time. It really feels like a cohesive body of work.

You shared a track from that EP with us, “Fire In Your Eyes.” What is the song about?

Gerry: I don’t know… cataracts?

Jason: I think the song’s about bum s*x—joking. I think it’s about emotional attachment to someone.

Christo: Snakes.

Adrien: It’s my favorite on the EP. I pushed for it as the single. The bassline is great—very beefy. It’s a powerful track.

Christo: It’s all of those things—especially the bum s*x, but like… cosmic bum s*x. It started with a woman in mind but became something deeper and more universal—like an invocation of cosmic love.

Sticking with “Fire In Your Eyes,” how long did it take to create the guitar solo?

Gerry: It was done on the day.

The night before, I struggled to come up with something that worked. Everything sounded basic. When I got to the studio early, I recorded several takes.

One stood out—I followed the chord progression, then added a chromatic, Randy Rhoads-style run. It doesn’t perfectly fit the chords, but it fits the feel of the song.

That’s what mattered most. I recorded it a few times and picked the best version. I’m really happy with how it turned out.

You changed the lyrics for an April Fools’ prank. How do you balance humor with being taken seriously?

Adrien: That was me. I replaced Christo’s vocals with my own as a joke. Inspired by the band messing around with lyrics.

Christo: We’re just normal people. We can be serious and passionate, but also playful.

We’re Irish too—being a bit silly comes naturally. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we care deeply about the music.

We want people to feel emotional depth, but also have fun, dance, and enjoy themselves.

Jason: We like showing our humor—it helps people relate and builds camaraderie in the band.

Gerry: For me, it’s all fun. Writing, rehearsing, playing live—it’s all part of the enjoyment.

What are your guilty pleasure songs? And what would you cover as a band?

Jason: “Something’s Gotten a Hold of My Heart” – Gene Pitney featuring Marc Almond.

Gerry: “Year 3000” by Busted. Also the Gundam Unicorn theme.

Adrien: “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley. It’s more than a meme—it’s a great, funky, inspirational song.

Christo: Michael Bolton—especially “I Loved You, But I Lied.” He’s phenomenal.

Gerry: We’d love to do a rock version of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by Elton John.

Where can people catch you live, and what’s your dream festival?

Gerry: Dream festival—Woodstock ‘99, purely for the notoriety.

Jason: We’re headlining Beardfire Festival on August 13th in Dublin. I’d love to play Rock in Rio—huge crowds and amazing energy.

Adrien: Hellfest in France would suit us—especially the stoner/tribal stage.

Christo: Boom Festival in Portugal. It’s more psychedelic, but I’d love to bring heavier music there.

Luna Motif – Honeydawn (All Rights Are Retained By Luna Motif)
If I joined you for a night out in Dublin, where would we go?

Gerry: Fibbers, Whelan’s, and The Sugar Club.

What local bands should people check out?

Gerry: Killjoy from Dundalk—very talented.

Jason: Dead Label—they’re doing really well locally and abroad.

Christo: San Rocco—their singer stood out, with a lower register and strong lyrics.

What inspired “Little Known Starlight”?

Gerry: We joked it was for new mothers exercising while breastfeeding. Honestly, it just sounds like an exercise song.

Christo: It’s about early morning sea swims at the Forty Foot in Dun Laoghaire.

It’s about connecting with nature, starting your day with purpose, and showing that rock music can also reflect a healthy, grounded lifestyle—not just s*x and drugs.

What have been the highs and lows of your journey so far?

Gerry: Highs are playing live and connecting with people.

Lows were lineup changes—at one point it was just me and Christo left. That was tough, but we stuck with it and rebuilt.

Now feels like the high point again.

Christo: That period was hard—we’d written so much with previous members.

But finding Jason and Adrien changed everything. They brought energy, organization, style, and new musical depth.

Now we feel ready for the future—and even thinking about an album.

If you could perform on another planet, which would it be?

Gerry: Pluto. Make Pluto a planet again.

Jason: Rick and Morty agrees.

Christo: Pluto.

How did forming during COVID shape your music?

Gerry: It delayed live shows, but gave us time to improve because we had nothing else to be f*cking doing.

Christo: A blessing and a curse.

Our first gig had incredible energy because people were starved for live music. That pushed us to keep improving.

If you had a band mascot, what would it be?

Gerry: A space-age skeleton—like our version of Eddie. Maybe called Frank.

Jason: A small, chaotic dog named Dudley, running around causing trouble.

Adrien: We already have one—my cat, Poppy.

Christo: Or… a chimp.

Luna Motif – The Journey (All Rights Are Retained By Luna Motif)
Who is most likely to start a conspiracy theory?

Jason: Christo.

Gerry: Birds are cameras. Watch them—they’re basically surveillance drones.

Christo: See? It’s not me!

Gerry: We’ve been Luna Motif—thanks for listenin!
