Introduction
Matt Heafy of the band Trivium has recently released a soundtrack for the “True Believers” comic book series. The full soundtrack is 30 minutes in length and the perfect accompaniment for the series written by Stephen Graham Jones and Joshua Matuya.
Today we are reviewing “Too Far Gone” which is the albums centrepiece. You can listen to the full album now on Spotify!
Review
The track starts with a really playful riff, soon joined by drums that has the main objective of building momentum. You can almost sense that when the drums enter, they serve as a guiding beacon leading to something significant and special.
That destination is the intense vocals that emerge unexpectedly. They embody the signature harsh sound I connect with Matt Heafy from his band Trivium. His band are not just outstanding in live performances but also excellent when it comes to their recordings.
I was lucky enough to catch them on their recent tour “Poisoned Ascendancy” with Bullet For My Valentine. Which celebrated the two bands first albums.
This prior connection leads me to truly appreciate the vocal delivery. In this instance, every single word is easy to pick out, allowing you to fully grasp the storytelling.
“They cannot worship me, the way I need, to be set free.”
Initially, I wondered whether the harsh vocals would be throughout, but the clean vocals offered a welcome change in pace. They slow things down a little in comparison to what was previously an onslaught.

The song really does paint the picture, which I think is what makes it an ideal match for a comic book. I’m excited that Matt has chosen to participate in this project.
The guitar solo absolutely slays, which is ironic since it aligns perfectly with the song’s topic. To be honest, this riff could have seamlessly fit into his band’s work, demonstrating the seriousness with which he approached this project. It pairs exceptionally well with the drums, which are outstanding all the way through the track.
“You must exterminate the underlings.”
I really enjoy how towards the end of the song the vocal styles mesh with alternate lines being done in each style. It really adds to the audio complexity of the track.
“You’re not a true believer, Your walls are caving in.”
If I had to be overly critical, I would point out that the song lacks a truly memorable hook. Something that would draw me back repeatedly. Nevertheless, I recognize that this track is intended to be part of a larger collection, and without that context, this song is being evaluated on its own.
What a track it is!
Final Thoughts
This track stands out as the crowning jewel of the soundtracks crown. With vibrant storytelling and striking imagery brought to life by dual vocals, it packs a punch. If this doesn’t inspire you to read the comic book series, then nothing will!
