Name The Classic Rock Album You Think Everyone Should Hear At Least Once?

For me this is a really sad realisation. That this band, or more to the point the singer is now god awful. That band being Guns n’ Roses. Sorry Axl but it is time to give it up. Especially after that TERRIBLE vocal performance at Ozzy Osbournes final ever show!

However that will not remove the fact that the album “Appetite For Destruction” is an absolute masterpiece!

Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine (All Rights Are Retained By Guns N’ Roses)

Spawning tracks such as “Sweet Child O’Mine”, “Welcome To The Jungle” & “Paradise City”, this album was STACKED with hits. To be honest the rest of the album isnt bad either!

Guns N’ Roses – Welcome To The Jungle (All Rights Are Retained By Guns N’ Roses)

Propelled forward by (at the time) an amazing frontman, one of the greatest guitarists of all time in Slash. As well as attitude produced by how the band both wrote and performed the songs this really is brilliant.

Guns N’ Roses – Paradise City (All Rights Are Retained By Guns N’ Roses)

Boy am I glad I saw these a few years back when the vocals were still passable! I want to know though what classic rock album should everyone hear at least once?

That was a good one. I’d have to say Back in Black is my choice. Brian Johnson stepped in and the band didn’t miss a beat.

That is totally true! But I think people need to listen to Highway To Hell + Back In Black in one sitting to truly appreciate the evolution of the band.

This question made my brain hurt because there are so many…I’ve narrowed it down to 3, but I could easily expand that list:

David Bowie – Station to Station
Ground-breaking avant-garde music. The title song is 3 songs in one, so beautifully crafted and executed.

    David Bowie – Diamond Dogs
The 3-song suite “Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)” is sublime, forming a mini-operetta that is mind-blowing.

Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street
This double album from the early 70s is filled with timeless, rock/blues infused music. There isn’t a stinker on there. I wore out my first vinyl copy. The Stones at their absolute finest.

Well at least you narrowed it down 😉

I cannot argue with these albums they are all absolute classics! 🙂

S2S is better than DD for me 🙂

I agree that S2S is superior to DD, but that 3-song sequence is definitely worth an honorable mention. 🙂

Completely agree. Appetite came along at the right time and just knocked it all out of the park. Love the album to this day but Axl needs to put a full stop and just move on. The album is in the history books, can’t ever change that. This would be a top 3 choice for me too.

But the one I think I’d have to go with is Pink Floy’s Dark Side of the Moon. Yeah, everyone picks this but it’s that good. And there’s a lot of really fond memories to go along with it. Just dim the lights and let it carry you away.

Yeah he really does need to stop and let someone take over the vocals , or at the very least get someone in to do the high notes!

Its picked often for good reason it is an excellent album! 🙂

Axl is hard to watch now. It’s sad, really, He went WAY too far with plastic surgery. I get it but it doesn’t even really look like him anymore. He really does need someone for the high notes if he continues. I just wish we could turn the clock back, even for just one more year and get to relive it as it happened. It was an awesome time.

DSOTM is that good, I just get a lot of crap when I say that.

I hope that the band continues but tbh its time for Myles Kennedy to step in and take over.

It is that good! Tell people they can tell me its not that good and ill sort em out!

I think it’s the sheer rawness of the record. And the way it weaves from beautiful ballads such as Sunday Morning to the noise lunacy of European Son. And Nico’s vocals when they appear!

Oh, man, that’s a difficult question to answer. I can narrow down to four that I would recommend to someone who is trying to expand their musical horizons:

    Steely Dan – Aja

Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon

    Beatles – Abbey Road

    Neil Young – Harvest

Oh, very evil. That’s why I come here.

I’d have to say Steely Dan’s Aja. Not only is it a great collection of music that fuses rock, jazz, and a bit of funk, but there’s also the incredible production values. And knowing the backstory of how it was recorded and how many musicians were used, I think it’s a great lesson in songwriting.

GnR is a good choice and there are so many I’d love to add but if it’s classic rock it has to be I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again by Janis. But honorable mention to Slowhand by Clapton, Exile on Main St. by the Stones.

There must be a million words that have already been written about Axl Rose. There’s probably a grad-school course in the man. So here I am adding one thing: Axl Rose reminds me of a Red Sox center fielder, Fred Lynn. In the 1970s he was about as good as it gets. He could catch anything, and what a sweet swing. And then he lost it. By the middle of his career, I wouldn’t have given you five cents for him. It happens. He didn’t have an appetite for destruction like Axl, he just has that disappointing career arc. Oh well, at least both guys can say that they were once at the top of their game.

Pick one classic album? Oh, you are so evil. Like several other commenters, I’m going to pick three, but I’m going farther out on a limb. I’ll pick the self-titled debuts by these bands:

    Blind Faith

    Buffalo Springfield

    Creedence Clearwater Revival

Thanks for this post. BTW, Appetite for Destruction describes one of my old dogs.

Haha, you are not nice at all!

There’s something about self-titled albums that always interests me. It’s something you only see in music. If J. K. Rowling and Stephen King wrote a book together, they wouldn’t call it Rowling and King. But then you have Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. I once thought of making a collection of nothing but self-titled albums, but my wife thought that was weird, plus I was afraid of getting stuck with bands that I don’t like.
