As always with my Tuesday up-and-coming bands posts , I focus on bands with under 500,000 monthly streams on Spotify, hopefully you discover new music along with me on this journey. I’ll be adding 3 songs from these weekly posts to my own Spotify Playlist.
Background Information
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you might have heard of Van Halen. But did you know that they were originally known as Mammoth? Well, the Mammoth is back alive and kicking! Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son, spent a significant amount of time playing in Van Halen before starting his own solo project/band called Mammoth WVH. Inspired by the early days of Van Halen, Wolfgang had always wanted to name his band Mammoth, and I must say, he’s carrying on the legacy brilliantly.
On the albums, Wolfgang essentially plays all the instruments himself, but he’s joined by a band for live performances. After all, until they perfect human cloning, it’s quite a challenge to handle multiple roles simultaneously! The work on his self-titled debut album began in 2015 but was delayed until 2021 due to his father’s illness. The single “Distance” was released as a heartfelt tribute to Wolfgang’s late father song starts at 24 seconds into the video above. Trust me when I say this, Mammoth WVH is not just another Van Halen tribute band, it is absolutely phenomenal!
Who Do They Sound Like?
Alterbridge , Dirty Honey & Rival Sons
Latest Album
Mammoth II was released in 2023 and follows on the great work from the self titled album Mammoth WVH. There is talk that Wolfgang is back in the recording studio working on album 3 which I find very exciting.
