Songs That Shaped Me – Motörhead – Ace of Spades

Let’s start this new post type with a big bang! My all-time favourite song  Ace of Spades by Motörhead.

Motörhead – Ace of Spades (All Rights Are Retained By Motörhead)

How has it shaped me?

I must admit, I’m usually a cautious individual who prefers playing it safe rather than taking unnecessary risks. I’d rather go the extra mile to ensure everything is perfect than risk making a mistake. However, this particular song has a magical effect on me. It fills me with a newfound confidence and a daring spirit to embrace risks, live life to the fullest, and simply have a blast. Because, let’s face it, the essence of this song lies in taking chances and embracing the thrill of uncertainty.

When did I first hear it ?

I think it was featured in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, a game I played excessively on the PlayStation. It consistently helped me achieve high scores, so I may have been guilty of constantly selecting that track just to hear “My Song” again.

When is the perfect time to listen to it ?

While working out! I think that is the perfect time for me to blast this song! It really pumps me up and pushes me to stay focused and motivated.

Additional notes

Lemmy (Kilmister) may not possess the typical hard rock voice like Bruce Dickinson, Dio, or Ozzy, but what sets him apart is his unique raspiness that perfectly complements the song’s tempo. The song flows effortlessly, with every element – guitar (Eddie Clark), vocals, bass (Lemmy), and drums (Phil Taylor) – harmonizing flawlessly. Even the ending is pure perfection! It’s fascinating how the song cleverly incorporates all the gambling cliches, and Lemmy used to have a playful moment when performing it live by singing the eight of spaces just to see if anyone would notice. Another cool fact is that Dave Grohl (Nirvana & Foo Fighters) got an Ace of Spades tattoo as a tribute to Lemmy.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have witnessed Motörhead’s last performance at Download Festival. Experiencing your favourite song live is a memory that will stay with me eternally. So, if you’re debating whether to purchase tickets to see the artist behind your beloved song, go for it. You never know when chances will slip away, so take a risk and live life to the fullest.

Ace of Spades is such a classic! I love it. One of the more impactful songs of my youth would probably be “Pretty Vacant” by The Sex Pistols. It was considered shocking back in the days when it 1st came out.

‘Ace of Spades’ is a hard driving song and i can see how it would help with motivation. 🙂

“Experiencing your favourite song live is a memory that will stay with me eternally.” Oh yes, I can totally relate to this! My number one concert bucket list artist was Metallica, and I finally crossed that off in 2017. Best memory ever! Also, I’m a huge Rod Stewart fan and have seen him live more than 20 times. He NEVER performed my favourite song of his, Sailing, until 2018. I was so overcome with emotion, that tears rolled down my face. And yes, I did record it for posterity. 🙂

Glad that you understand why I like it so much 🙂 oh awesome! I saw Metallica last year (actually twice in 1 weekend!) And they were great ! Oh wow I bet that must have been one hell of a moment for you!

This is a cool concept – Writing about the effects songs have had on your life. I find they always impact each individual differently. I’ve been trying to encourage song lyrics disucssions among the communities I build activities for.

I definitely have a few songs I play when I need to be more daring… Or rather, in my case, to make me feel less embarassed about failed risks I’ve taking. I could use a few more. Thanks for sharing!

I become a public safety hazard when that song plays in my truck. Good song.

Ace of Spades is one of a quartet of songs that I always associate with gambling lyrics. Certainly, ‘The Gambler’ by Kenny Rogers, ‘No Cheap Thrill’ by Suzanne Vega fill the country and folk-pop categories well.

Megadeth’s ‘Train of Consequences’ is perhaps closer to Motörhead. The gambling aspect is perhaps reinforced by the video, but I always saw the ‘set the ball rolling’, ‘clicking out the miles’ and ‘tied to the tracks’ as a clever dovetailing of the train analogy with a roulette wheel.
