These two really did not like each other either! Pavement called out the Smashing Pumpkins on their song Range Life , for not having a place on the scene. The Smashing Pumpkins then threatened to pull out of several festival performances if Pavement were added to the bill!

Never really was a fan of either band and have not heard much from them, However, if I were to base it just on your post and the music videos I would then say I favor Smashing Pumpkins,

pavement is awesome…Shoot the Singer is one of their finest songs…so casual, so ironic, and indifferent. Slanted and Enchanted is a classic album too…

Between the two bands, I have to say Smashing Pumpkins hands down. Both Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness were part of the soundtrack of my college years.

When it comes to Pavement, they’ve just never done much for me, personally.

And I think that’s fair enough there is plenty of bands that have never personally resonanated with me

I’m not very familiar with Pavement’s music, whereas I’ve heard many of Smashing Pumpkin’s songs. While I sometimes find Billy Corgan’s quirky and shrill vocals grating, I have to concede Smashing Pumpkins are the better band.

TLDR: it’s a draw for me.

I was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan in jr high/high school, but didn’t follow any releases past the late 90s. Meanwhile, I discovered Pavement later- like in the past 5 years. While there are some SP songs making the rounds in my playlists, Pavement is also there. There are some SP songs that don’t hold the same allure as they did for me back in the 90s and meanwhile I’ve gained a more recent appreciation for Pavement.

That’s actually really interesting! Is there any smashing pumpkins song that you now no longer like ? And is there any pavement songs you originally didn’t like and now like ?

For Smashing Pumpkins, I remember owning every EP and LP they released from Gish through Machina. I could listen to any of those straight through without skipping a track. Now, if I pull up SP on Spotify I find that outside of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, I’m not into songs from those other releases. I’ve not checked out their newer stuff.

I never listened to Pavement in the 90s. I was aware of them just never checked them out until like 2019. So far I’m liking most everything from Slanted and Enchanted and Crooked Rain. I need to delve into more of Pavement.

I seem to remember that when Pavement bandleader Stephen Malkmus stopped in at his record label’s offices to observe the twenty-fifth anniversary of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Mr. Malkmus said for a video promo that he wrote Range Life trying to include a rock ballad in the tradition of The Eagles. The only thing similar I saw from the Pumpkins’ frontman in the years to follow the 90s was Billy Corgan interviewing a Chicago-area magazine whose niche was cat psychology.

Pumpkins. I will forever remember the auditorium going white/black in the light show in time with “despite of my rage I’m still just a rat in a cage” when I saw them. Cool memories.
