Cozzer’s Question 01/07/24

Who do you think is the greatest female vocalist in rock and metal music?

I’ll go first. To me it’s got to be Lzzy Hale. She is one of the most consistently excellent performers that I’ve ever seen live and her vocal range is incredible too.

Let us know your opinion in the comments!

Teenage me says Hayley Williams , Classic me probably goes with Joan Jett , current me agrees with your answer of Lzzy Hale , her range is a bit of a joke to be honest it shouldn’t actually be allowed.

I first thought of Floor Jansen. Her voice is mind-blowing.

But then again I have another singer in mind with an extraordinary vocal range of three and a half octaves and a personal preference of mine: Tarja. So that’s my choice.

Strangely enough both singers are or were tied to Nightwish. Tarja is a former singer of this group and Floor Janssen is now a member of Nightwish 😉

Lee Aaron was the reigning queen of Canadian metal in the 80s. While not metal, Darby Mills of the Canadian 80s band The Headpins can belt it out.

Current favourite: Taylor Momsen (The Pretty Reckless)

I second Ann Wilson of Heart. (Not to be confused with country singer Anne Wilson. Nothing against her, but she’s no Ann Wilson.)

I’m going to guess most folks won’t know her, but I vote for Nina Hagen, she has so much range and sings everything from punk rock to gospel, I LOVE HER!

I have been a HUGE fan of hers since the80’s. I think I have just about EVERYTHING she has recorded except for the German version of Nightmare before Christmas. I was lucky enough to see her in person now 4 times ( more than anyone else I have seen in person) I sometimes joke that she is who I want to be when I grow up. lol. She is so freaking awesome.

Maybe not the greatest, but to add a name that is more relevant in a young way: Lia Metcalfe of The Mysterines. She and her band opened up for the Arctic Monkeys in the UK last summer and have just released their sophomore album a couple of weeks ago.

Having seen most of the above mentioned ladies live. The one whose voice has stood the test of time best. Ann Wilson without question. With a few exceptions, Jais Joplin died before I was born Sadly I wasn’t able to see The Cranberries. Dolores O’Roirdan a phenomenal voice. R.I.P.
A fellow countryman of The Cranberries who was not mentioned, but had a voice that was in class of its own was Sinead O’Connor. R.I.P.
I’m a little surprised that nobody said Melissa Etheridge, Stevie Nicks or
    Christine Mcvie.R.I.P.
Having recently seen Heart, Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks. All of them put on a great show. Each of them took a couple of songs to warm up.
Ann Wilson still had every bit of her range.
Praying for a speedy recovery so we can see her in 2025.
Grace Slick is still good but not Haight Ashbury good.
Melissa Etheridge Cancer took some of what once was. Is just a little less.
Joan Jett is still a force of nature but can any 65 the old howl like they could at 25
Amy Lee has a big beautiful voice. Time is starting to show the cracks in that beautiful voice.
Now that this epic has stretched into what could be compared to War and Peace in length I will leave it at that.

I wanted to answer this the day you posted it, but there was a name in the back of my mind that I couldn’t quite recollect. Floor Jansen, Ann Wilson, and Lizzy Hale immediately came to mind, but there was someone else. I read the comments and saw Dora Pesch and Amy Lee, but there was still a name nagging at me. It finally hit me while listening to my playlist the other day and “Shadows of the Night” played -Pat Benatar! I don’t know that I can pick a favorite among these, or who is best, but I would probably lean towards Ann or Pat for their longevity.
