Discover The Funeral Portrait: Anthemic Rock with Prime Emo Melodies

A fox holding a vinyl cd in a shop. There is a sign reading up and coming bands in the background and headings reading metal and rock in the foreground.

As always with my Tuesday up-and-coming bands posts , I focus on bands with under 500,000 monthly streams on Spotify, hopefully you discover new music along with me on this journey. Catch the songs from this in the Fox Reviews Rock Spotify Playlist.

Background Information

Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, The Funeral Portrait is a rock band that knows how to pull at your emotions. With Lee Jennings on vocals, Cody Weissinger on guitar, Robert Weston on bass, Homer Umbanhower on drums, and Caleb Freihaut on keyboards/guitar, their music is a rollercoaster of a listen. From punk vibes to prime emo melodies, and even a touch of stadium rock, they have a little something for everyone.

The band, started in 2014, has shared the stage with industry veterans such as Pvris, Escape the Fate, and Issues. Their recent surge in new music has me eagerly anticipating the band’s future direction. Notably, they have released two singles featuring Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills on “Suffocate City” and Bert McCracken from The Used on “You’re So Ugly When You Cry”. With anthemic songs and theatrical live performances, make me extremely eager to catch them in concert!

The band’s Spotify page declares their mission to ” Represent the outcasts from all walks of life ” and ” Offer a space to belong and feel safe and be accepted for our differences”. “. Count me in as one of those weird kids! It looks like the 387,000 monthly listeners are on board too!

Latest Album

Typically, I would mention the band’s latest album, which is their 2016 release “A Moment Of Silence”. However, this time around, I want to point out that the band has been consistently putting out music since 2019, hinting at a possible new album on the horizon (fingers crossed!).

I’ve actually seen The Funeral Portrait live, without intending to. Last year they toured with Concrete Castles, whom I remember talking about in a comment on a previous post here but I don’t remember which post it was.

They were good. They had those big neon coffin signs from the Suffocate City video on stage with them. I don’t remember a lot, though, because I wasn’t familiar with their music, and I was still on a fanboy high from having gotten there early and hanging out with Concrete Castles at the merch table before the show. 😂 I did meet Lee from TFP briefly at their merch table too.
