What is your favourite Cover Song of all time?
I’ll go first. My favourite Cover song is “The Real Me” by W.A.S.P. To me it is such a good cover and truly honours the original.

Either Disney’s “Cruella DeVille” by the Replacements or “All Along the Watchtower” by Hendrix. If I don’t stop there, I’ll keep listing song after song because I tend to like covers as long as the band owns it and shows some respect for the original, instead of them trying to make it sound like the original song. In those cases, what’s the point if it sounds exactly like the original? And never do Floyd… And be careful of covering Doors. Just… don’t… with Zeppelin.
My favourite is Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails ‘Hurt’. The last single before his death and a music video capturing his life just all fits perfectly together. You can hear the rawness of his voice and it’s a man who has done a lot in his life. Just feels very real.
I also got goosebumps when they used it for the Logan trailer 😂
honourable mentions for
Metallica ‘Whiskey in the Jar’
The Clash ‘I Fought the Law’
There’s also Punk Rock Factory that are a cover band and I haven’t heard a song they’ve not done well!😂
I’d like to nominate a rather obscure cover:
‘The Shape of Things to Come’ by Slade – one of the best tracks they ever recorded and far superior to the original by Max Frost and the Troopers.
Can I mention two other covers?
‘The House of the Rising Sun’ by Frijid Pink – radically different to the best-known version, by the Animals, and an illustration of just how much music had changed in about five years;
‘MacArthur Park’ by Beggar’s Opera – the vocals are a bit over the top, but the musicianship is superb.
Two things come to mind. First, this, because with all due respect to the Sexy Saxophone Guy, these lyrics work so well as dark rock nu-metal than they do as easy listening.

And then this, because of the way they go up an octave at the end. I like the original song already, but what they did at the end makes it so much more powerfully emotional. (And you already know my thoughts on this singer, from her other band that we’ve talked about before.) (The video has an ad at the beginning; if this link copied right, it should skip right to the start of the music.)

That could 100% work or maybe by a power metal band. I would love to see that done 🤘🏻

I’ll go for The Pretty Reckless’ cover of Champagne Supernova/Dear Prudence by Oasis and the Beatles. Taylor Momsen’s got a cool yet raspy voice.
For an album-full of covers, I have to go with “If I Were a Carpenter” by Sonic Youth, among others.
But I have to admit, this question had me thinking for a few minutes haha
They are all fantastic choices 🤘🏻
