Cozzer’s Question 12/08/24

Who is the most influential Rock or Metal band from your country?

I’ll go first. I think one of the most influential bands from my home country of England is the mighty Black Sabbath. With such a lengthy career and so many bands saying Sabbath got them into music, They have earned their place in history.

Going hyper-local (Minneapolis/Minnesota, USA), it might be a tossup between two ends of the spectrum: Prince for the general pop/rock influence. I think we’re still discovering his many alternative names and who he wrote with and for. He definitely had a huge impact on all genres of music in the 80s.

Often listed as an influence by the bands that followed them (quite a few that made it much bigger than them), from grunge to garage I’ll offer up The Replacements. I’m always amazed at the bands and musicians who identify them as an influence.

Yea think I’m going with Prince but might include Michael Jackson at a close even second.

I can get behind that, although he never did that much for me. Still, in terms of helping define pop and rock for a generation, he certainly was a heavy hitter in that respect.

I answered your last post with The Stones, and I have to go with them again here. They’re still rockin’ on, still bringing in the audiences and still inspiring thoughts of ‘I wish I was’ in the hearts of countless other musicians. There are so many other greats from the 60s and 70s – The Who, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd to name but a few – that I could be here all night. I’m off to a bar instead though. Thanks for the nostalgia! 😎

Seeing as my dad has both Destroyer and Countdown to Ecstasy, it’s a toss-up between KISS and Steely Dan for me. I’ve always loved both their sound and their unique way of “moving the music.”

Just to name a few 😂

It is mad that we’ve had so many greats from our small island. Even our neighbours Ireland have had a fair amount

If you ever go to Dublin, you need to go to the rock n roll museum. They have a lot of Phill Lynotts items. Plus a statue in Dublin too.

We’ve got quite a few in the US mentioning Jefferson Airplane, Journey, Bon Jovi and the list goes on not to mention all the rock greats like Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel. I also wanted to mention a favorite that I just had a hard time to get over that COVID actually took him Meat Loaf.

All great bands! I saw Springsteen live last year and he is incredible! I would love to see billy Joel and Bon Jovi.Journey were playing a gig with cheap trick in my city, but they have now cancelled it which is a shame, as I wanted to go.

So hard to narrow down, because of great influences in different specific rock genres…but I’ve narrowed it down to Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Lou Reed & Velvet Underground, and Aerosmith.

If you consider him rock, I will say Bob Dylan for the US. For a purely metal answer, I think it is Metallica. VU is also a great answer. I can’t imagine rock or metal sounding the same now without those.

I heard of them, but I just know today that they are the first.
In Thailand, I do not want to count the first one because most artists and vocalists back in those days didn’t write the songs by themselves. The records companies hired composers to write for them.

2 great songs! I will always sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody and Don’t Stop me now. I really like their first single Keep Yourself Alive. That song doesn’t really get much attention but I really enjoy it.

Late to this but will add one more because this list is male heavy… Blondie (US). Debbie Harry has had an amazing career and did a lot to center female rock singers. Also dig her contributions to other genres taking off, such as hip hop.
