Cozzer’s Question 19/08/24

How has Rock/Metal music been used effectively in video games and other forms of entertainment?

I’ll go first. I think one of the best uses of Metal music I have seen in recent years was for the DOOM (2016) and DOOM: Eternal Soundtracks. Not only did these soundtracks lend themselves very well to the fast paced gameplay, but they also brought metal music to people that possibly have never listened to it before.

Any opportunity to increase the fan base of Rock and Metal is a win to me.

I think for me the most effective cross over that i paid attention to was Brütal Legend . With cameos from the likes of Jack Black, Rob Halford, Lemmy and Ozzy Osbourne! Thats not even mentioning that the main weapon was an electric guitar axe, and the soundtrack was incredible! 107 tracks from 75 different bands!

I was just going to mention this one. It was probably the best one, although I’m not sure it survived the licensing pitfall most games have to deal with as they age — it might still be intact, but a lot of games lose their soundtracks over time — sadly.

Yeah i suspect you are likely correct on that , sadly the rumoured sequel is unlikely to ever happen either 😦

I second Brütal Legend, but I think the classic metal/game crossover that really introduced the idea was for the Devil May Cry games. The music wasn’t as good, but I think that it was really the first game series to have that style of metal as the battle music.

Devil May Cry! First of all that would have been a great name for a band …. but also brilliant games

For the time they were released, they were quite refreshingly adult in their themes as I recall. If I think about it, there are plenty of today’s games that have DMC in their DNA (musically and in gameplay)

For me, it was Twisted Metal, Guitar Hero, Rock Hero, Spaltterhouse, and Quake. The inclusion of Rock/Metal in both the music and artistic choices of the games definitely added to the already awesome experience.

It’s always amazing how a great soundtrack can really lift a game to the status of ‘legendary’

The guitar hero and rock band games helped a lot getting people into rock and metal music.

The Tony Hawks game had fun soundtracks.

But one song that sticks out for me is the Offsprings ‘All I Want’ on Crazy Taxi. It always got me in the mood for driving a virtual taxi like a crazy person.

While I never played the video, one of my favorite Avenged Sevenfold songs, Danger Line, was used in a video game. The name of that is escaping me right now. What I appreciated about the song itself is that a7x didn’t glorify war; it actually speaks to some of the horrors of being an enlisted soldier in combat, such as dying alone. I let my son play all of the games he wanted to when he was high school, such as Call of Duty, but he used critical thinking skills, too. While I don’t think video games “cause” violence, they might perhaps make military enlisting seem more illustrious.
Anyway, it’s a terrific from great album! I would actually like to play the game but it’s many years old, now. 🤓
