Introduction
Kensei is one hell of an interesting band. The band was forged in the flames of the Black Country in England, specifically in Dudley. They are making waves at the moment. Recently winning Metal To The Masses has meant that they got the chance to play at Bloodstock 2024! (Which they smashed out of the park)
Bringing high energy and big sing-along tunes, anyone who sees them live is in for a treat! They bring some massive riffs, and every member of the band contributes to the sound brilliantly.
The band has already released new music this year. We at Fox Reviews Rock were thrilled when we were contacted about reviewing their latest song “Paralysis.” It is released TODAY! Check the band on social media! Also don’t forget to check out our interview with the band too!

Review
The song kicks off with powerful and proficient drumming, serving as an excellent introduction. While many bands often opt for a loud start, this track takes a different approach! The blend of drums with bass and guitars clearly indicates that the riffs are going to be a highlight throughout. I want to draw attention to the intricate finger work on the guitar; that level of skill is truly remarkable.
Given that the band plays melodic death metal, it’s no surprise to hear unclean vocals. These vocals are not only powerful and impactful, but also distinctly recognizable. Featuring a blend of aggressive and emotive sections, resulting in a truly outstanding performance! The clarity achieved in several parts while employing this technique deserves to be highlighted as well.
As the song moves into the chorus, I find myself pleasantly surprised CLEAN VOCALS? Absolutely awesome! The blend of harmonies and clean singing with the unclean vocals in the chorus truly enhances this track. I even say it boosts the band’s overall sound. This combination is something they should definitely explore more often, and I’m really enjoying it!
At around the two-minute mark, there’s an electrifying instrumental break dominated by drums and bass that gets the adrenaline flowing. This is soon followed by the classic “blegh” sound, leading into some powerful heavy riffs! It marks the transition to more intense vocals and harmonized uncleans. This is fantastic because the raw emotion in the lyrics shines through in the vocal delivery. You can really feel the pain, and that’s what makes the best songs resonate so deeply with listeners.
The guitar solo that comes next is simply outstanding. It reinforces my belief that these musicians are destined for greatness, and frankly, they should have already achieved it! The final chorus introduces a slight twist compared to the earlier ones. It is infused with a deeper emotional meaning and delivery to match.
The lyrics of this song convey a powerful message about feeling unworthy of love, even when it’s being offered. It captures the struggle of battling inner demons that lead to constant self-doubt about the relationship. This turmoil can leave you feeling paralyzed. You fear losing that special someone. Yet, you feel the necessity of spending time alone to confront your own thoughts.
Music Video
We had the exciting opportunity to catch an exclusive sneak peek of the music video for “Paralysis.” Right off the bat, what stood out to me was the band’s collaboration once again with Ironside Studios. They are known for their incredible work in both photography and videography. It definitely sparked our interest!
The video opens with a band member bound, representing the internal conflict and paralysis expressed in the song. I also admire the varied coloured lighting in the close-up shots of the band. Incorporating strobe lights would have added an extra layer of intensity.
As the character breaks free, it resonates with the lyrics that convey the theme of liberation from a relationship. The video concludes with the character panting and surveying the area. Representing the emotional strain. It also shows the physical strain that a disappointing relationship can impose on an individual. I appreciate the video’s setting. It would have benefited from including something that the protagonist was actively escaping from as well.
Overview
Kensei has truly outdone themselves with this track; it’s easily their finest work yet! That’s quite a statement to make! The blend of harmonies and pristine vocals really elevates their overall sound. If the band keeps progressing in this direction, I’m certain their popularity will skyrocket in the coming years. Personally, I’m eagerly anticipating a full-length album and where their hard work will take them!
