LØLØ – Mama Roux’s, Birmingham UK

Tonight’s gig takes us to Mama Roux’s in Birmingham, a small venue with a capacity of 320, this is a new venue for us and an artist we haven’t seen before, LØLØ.

LØLØ is Canadian Pop-punk singer who featured on the Disney album ‘A Whole New Sound’ covering ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen. After hearing her from this album, we really got into her music, we saw that she was playing locally and decided to book tickets, as this is her first UK tour, also promoting her debut album Falling for Robots and Wishing I Was One.

Queueing to get into Mama Roux’s

We arrived at 7pm as the doors were just opening, although there was a large queue when we got there, it didn’t take too long to get inside after being scanned with a metal detector. As soon as we walked in the bar was on the right, and merch on the left. We obviously headed to check out the merch first where we bought a signed vinyl and a pink t-shirt with ‘you turn me on but you give me depression’ written on the front, the name of one of her songs.

We then grabbed a drink before heading into the main area where we decided to stay instead of heading up to the balconies. It seemed like there was a long wait from us getting in and the support act, Gus, beginning his set.

Gus

Gus is a Canadian singer, with a dedicated UK fan base, a group of people at the front have been to all 5 UK shows on this tour to see him, they even have matching tattoos of the lyrics of his song ‘pluto’ and although it wasn’t part of his setlist he did play some of this song as it was the last night in the UK.

Putting on a great show performing songs ‘No More Freedom’, ‘Big Things Small Seeds’ and ‘Party’, Gus also did a great job with his crowd interactions too, he was also telling us that he learnt to pronounce Birmingham correctly through LØLØ, as she got it wrong the last time she was performing there! We didn’t know anything about Gus before this gig, but we really enjoyed him and we have added some of his songs to our playlist and hope to see him again in the future.

No More Freedom – Gus (All Rights Retained By Gus)

After a short wait the stage filled with smoke and the prop robots eyes were flashing lights as LØLØ began her first song ‘omg’ from backstage. LØLØ put on a great show with a variety of sad and upbeat songs, and telling the crowd of her experiences and how she came to write the songs, she also mentioned that she was anxious to put on a headliner tour as she thought she wouldn’t sell that many tickets, but having to upgrade her venue to a larger capacity proved her wrong!

The highlights of our night were ‘The Floor is Lava’ with a  snippet of ‘Brain Stew’ by Green Day, ‘u turn me on (but you give me depression)’ and when pom poms were thrown into the crowd and an audience member was bought on stage for ‘Debbie Downer’.

LØLØ

Before the night began we didn’t know too much about LØLØ, we thought she had great energy and she’s a lot heavier live than in her recorded music (we preferred her live!) she also makes a special t-shirt for every location she plays at, the one for this gig said ‘I Can’t Pronounce Birmingham’ which was then sold at the end of the night.

Sad for the night to be coming to an end, LØLØ played ‘I Would Fix U if I Could’ and her new single ‘DON’T’ before finishing the night with a double encore of ‘Snow In Berlin’ and ‘Hot Girls In Hell’

DON’T – LØLØ (All Rights Retained By LØLØ)

With her catchy songs, great stage persona and high energy, we can see LØLØ getting more and more popular and we will definitely be going to see her again, whenever she returns to the UK!

Another top review! Got some cool vibes going there outdoors. I gave the tracks a listen, admittedly it’s not my usual fare but they sounded good to me.
