Sum 41 – Motorpoint Arena Nottingham UK

For the 3rd time in 12 months, we are back watching Sum41, but this time it was a little different with it being their headliner tour instead of at a festival, and not just any tour, it’s their Final Tour ever!

We first saw them together in Las Vegas last October at When We Were Young Festival , and then again at Nottingham’s Download Festival. Both festivals gave us the confidence to know this tour was going to be an incredible show and Sum41 did not disappoint.

We headed into the Motorpoint and as usual we A lined for the merchandise stall, we thought it could’ve been better as it was their last tour but there was a decent selection of wearables unfortunately there was no vinyl or signed merch, much to our disappointment. We then got some food and drinks before heading down into the stadium.

After what felt a really long wait, The Bronx came on stage. They are a punk band from Los Angeles, and although they have played in Nottingham many times over their 22 year career, Matt Caughthran (who we thought strongly resembled WWE star Kurt Angle) still couldn’t pronounce Nottingham properly.

The Bronx began their set with ‘White Shadow’ followed by the lead singer talking a lot about the city and that they’d even watched Soft Play at Rock City the night before. The Bronx played a variety of high energy songs, such as ‘Heart Attack’ and ‘Knifeman’ but we felt that they were asking for too many mosh pits instead of cracking on and letting them organically develop. The Bronx finished their 45 minute set with ‘Around The Horn’

After what felt like another long wait, Sum 41 came bounding on stage in the same fashion as the previous two times we saw them, going in hard with ‘Motivation’ and instantly bringing the crowd to a frenzy!

Unlike at the festivals we have seen them at, this set had some sad songs as well as the hits but they all blended together incredibly well as the crowd felt every high and low of the night, confetti cannons,  inflatable balloons, pyro and smoke were constantly going off throughout, which just added to the incredible atmosphere!

They played hit after hit finishing the night with ‘Pieces’, ‘Fat Lip’ and ‘Still Waiting’, accumulating to wave after wave of mosh pits and crowd surfers.

As this was Sum41’s final tour, Deryck Whibley was telling us about the band’s history in between songs, and even the story of his first guitar! He got it when he was 17, whic was stolen from his house in 2003, but after a long search for it they were reunited only a few weeks before this gig!

As the night drew to an end Sum41 played their first encore ‘Summer’, Waiting on a Twist of Fate’ and ‘In Too Deep’, leaving the stage with a heartfelt goodbye as for many of us it’ll be the last time we get to see them live. The lights came on and the crowd began to head out. Then all of a sudden the lights dimmed again, about half the audience was out the door while Deryck  said through the microphone ‘shut the doors, whoever is out is out’ as they began to play a second encore! Finishing the night with ‘So Long Goodbye’ and ‘Machine Gun’.

We’re sad that Sum 41 are calling it a day, we are grateful that we got to see them a lot in the last year and hope they return in the future.

Sounds like an awesome gig 👌 I quite like Sum41 and their music always makes me remember the American Pie films for some reason.

It was a great gig! They have a very American Pie sense of humour and I’m pretty sure ‘Fat Lip’ was in American Pie 2

Yeah, music you listen to on Spring Break (I hope I’ve got that right 😂), good times and great get togethers with your friends and parties 🥳 your post has inspired me to write my own review/experience of the best gig I’ve been to 🙌

We are based in the UK so we don’t have spring break here either. But I do believe you are right! You should absolutely write about your best gig, let us know when you do, we would love to read it!

That sounds like you had a great time! It’s great when you get to watch your favourite artists and they have good support too! What was the castle like as a venue?

AWESOME!!! Sum41 will probably play in Canada again sometime, they come from Ajax which is south east of Newmarket. The US too. But at least they did a second encore! Cool beans! The first band sounds cool too. 😀

You should definitely try to get to see them, they’re not going to be a band after this tour is over! 😭

Yeah… I wonder if they are retiring back to Ajax or where ever… gosh, they are young! Look at fucking the Sex Pistols, they have been around since the mid 70s ffs… longevity means nothing nowadays! 😮

Maybe they’ll come back in the future, but honestly they’re living my dream or retiring early hahah! The Sex Pistols have put out less music over that time though!

I do not say this lightly. This was your great review to date! Obviously I was jealous that I didn’t get to go but I thought it was well laid out , plenty of information and I felt like I was there. BRAVO both of you ❤️

Haha, thanks! We thought it was one of our mid tier ones. I guess we all have different perspectives and that’s why we work together well as a team!

Looks and sounds like a good time! Even cooler that you got to see them on their final tour (although I have trouble believing when artists say this, thanks Ozzy.) I can appreciate the dynamic performance with ups and downs, it’s hard to keep at 100% through a whole concert unless you’re well prepared. Although I wasn’t too big on pop-punk growing up, I loved Fat Lip and Hell Song. Thanks for bringing us along to another show, and I look forward to the next review!

Funny you say that, we actually saw Yellowcard last night, who also split up 8 years ago.. I guess everyone needs a break, and nothing has to be forever!

It is hard, but I actually think they could have done it if they wanted to! The crowd was relentless and non stop energy!

I don’t how to classify Sum41’s music. It sounds like sandbox rock.

Ooh, I’ve never heard of that term before. What other bands would you put in that genre?

Let me explain: when your voice and the guitar play something resembling an algorithm, and the words become mathematical sounds, it doesn’t reflect the rhythm’s sound but rather the opposite of harmony. It’s like deconstructing rap, which uses voices to claim the sound of their origins. I use the term “rock” as the opposite of drums and bass, and “sandbox” because minimalism feels almost childlike (not about art, but purely about sound)
