Added Color – Interview

Introduction

New York based trio Added Color are an Alternative-Rock band with a little bit of Brazilian flair. When brothers Daniel and Kiko left Sao Paulo for Brooklyn they met up with Tim. The rest as they say is history. Together they produce a hard hitting emotional rollercoaster of excellent tunes!

Interview

You say your music is for lunatics… why is that (Just trying to self-diagnose haha as I love it) ?

Added Color – To be a Lunatic is to live your life unapologetically and not conform. Our world tries to stifle individuality and make us fit into a box, which makes our world a more boring place.

Added Color is about adding your color to a black and white world, and to do that you have to be a Lunatic.  People who are considered crazy are just people who are different from the average person, and we are here to celebrate them.

Its been three years since your last album , do you intend on releasing another in the near future?

Added Color – Though it’s been 3 years since our full length, we’ve been releasing singles every few months since. We can’t stop writing, so this has been the best way to get our music out there in time and within the confines of a DIY budget.

That said, we have about 20 songs in the works and are narrowing them down with the goal of releasing an album. We just got back from LA where we worked with badass producer Anton De Lost, and things are coming together faster than expected. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a full length by early next year.

Daniel & Kiko , what was the music scene like growing up in Brazil , how do you think it effects the bands sound?

Added Color – The beauty of Brazil is that not only does it have an insanely rich musical culture, but we also consume a ton of music from all over the world. Metal and rock were huge when we were growing up there, but we were also around samba, Afro-Brazilian religious music, etc.

We’ve always incorporated those rhythms in our riffs, and have been making them more and more obvious in our new work with some of the crazy industrial sound we’ve been making.

Tim , how do you think your time growing up in the states is similar/different to that of your Brazillian contingent within the band?

Added Color – Its always fun to discuss with the guys what was and wasn’t popular during our formative years.  Some artists/songs don’t overlap at all and its hard to find any rhyme or reason in what becomes a global sensation.  I grew up in central MA at a time when emo/hardcore was everywhere.

There’s also a lot of cultural differences, but one that sticks out to me is how rich the music is from Brazil.  I think this has given the brothers a deep understanding of rhythm that seems to be totally ingrained in them in a way that I don’t see in myself or anyone I grew up playing music with.

What made you select Morocco to go on tour to?

Added Color – Our old bassist was part Moroccan, and we were invited to do a few tours there. Our fanbase grew, and we were invited to headline L’Boulevard Festival for 10,000 people in the Casablanca soccer stadium. It was insane.

What is better , Brazilian or American food? Whats the best dish from each place?

Added Color – Biased, but I think Brazilians perfected the burger and the hot dog, and we have a pretty rich culinary culture. My favorite Brazilian dish is feijoada, but Brazilian steakhouses are heaven.

There has been three singles already this year, which of these do you feel is the best?

Added Color – They are all our babies so it’s hard, but Disposable opened Added Color to a whole new audience and has really helped the band grow, especially in the US. We thought it was going to be a deep cut (since it has a weird structure and is on the longer side), but the opening lines “I’m your slave I’m your whore” seemed to have resonated with people.

When you’re making a song , is there anything that identifies it to you as a hit?

Added Color – I don’t think you should be thinking about that when writing. It just has to feel right and honest to you. You can’t control what will make other people drawn to it.

If you had to cover another bands song , whose song would it be, which song and why ?

Added Color – We’ve covered two songs recently (rock and roll by Zeppelin and Fear Of The Dark by Iron Maiden). We were toying with the idea of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or “ Something In The Way” by Nirvana. I just love the idea of taking Nirvana’s vibe and bringing it into our world.

For a band called Added Color , your merch store is filled with black and white items. When are we getting a rainbow shirt!?

Added Color – The rainbow is the music that lives within 😉

What do you mean is one hell of a song! We love the lyrics , would you mind going into a little background on this song for us? What inspired the lyrics?

Added Color – Actually Tim was on the phone with Spectrum and the customer service was being an asshole, and that’s where the lyrics came from. Seriously….

What is the best and worst thing about social media?

Added Color – The best thing is that you get to connect with your audience on your own terms, and find artists that you would’ve never found otherwise. The worst thing is that it is consuming people and making everyone even more anxious and shallow.

In relation to art, it’s making us consume art in 15 second increments, and people are thinking of how they will promote their work on social media while they are creating. That’s pretty lame.

Where is your favourite place in Brooklyn NY to play?

Added Color – That’s a really hard question to answer, but Union Pool has a special place in our hearts. That’s where we played our first sold out shows in Brooklyn.

Can you tell us something about the band that nobody else knows?

Added Color – Nice try 😉

Props to Spectrum Customer Service for their inspiration 😂 There’s something about three-member bands…The Police, Rush, going way bac, Three Dog Night… they have a tightness that’s hard to describe. Great post 😎👍
