Heavy Lungs – Interview

Introduction

Bristol based punk band use their surroundings to inspire their songs. The band famously released an EP within a month of forming. The quartet describe working with each other as “something similar to dating three people at the same time. Daunting, exhausting, but not without some very serious privileges.”

Interview

So first of all, how can you have (A bit of) a birthday? Do you just take half the day , or maybe you was born on a leap year 29th Feb, could you go into a little background of the song for us?

Heavy Lungs – So the song name came from a guitar tech in London. I had bought this old 70s Les Paul on Denmark street and they said they’d set it up and service it before I went back to Bristol, and the tech said ‘sure, I’ll give it a bit of a birthday’

We just liked that phrase a lot. The song came together as just a fun idea one day and we thought we have to use that phrase as the title!

Heavy Lungs – (A Bit Of A) Birthday (All Rights Are Retained By Heavy Lungs)

We have heard that we can expect a new album in 2025 called Caviar. Be truthful now, was this just an excuse to buy expensive caviar on the bands credit card?

Heavy Lungs – Well I’m allergic to fish so really hope the other guys haven’t done that!

What can fans look forward to on the new album, how does it differ from your previous releases?

Heavy Lungs – It’s more concise a message for sure. As a whole I think it’s a great package of a time and space and an energy. It was fun to make and I think you can hear that. We focused more on the sound of it this time and the hooks etc. Less smoke and mirrors and more bubble machines and vr goggles

What is the funniest thing to ever happen to you on tour/ at a show?

Heavy Lungs – Someone once threw a Costa cup of piss out the window of the van on the way to a show and it blew back all over George’s face.

Speaking on previous releases All Gas No Brakes came out in 2023, what would you say the most under rated song on that album is?

Heavy Lungs – I think Angle Grinder is my favourite

Heavy Lungs – Angle Grinder (All Rights Are Retained By Heavy Lungs)

Rock, Paper, Scissors, which one are you going with?

Heavy Lungs – Scissors, always.

If fans want to take a deep dive into past songs by Heavy Lungs, what song should they check out?

Heavy Lungs – Well there’s not much of a back catalogue, so just listen to it all

Heavy Lungs – Descend (All Rights Are Retained By Heavy Lungs)

So where does the band name come from? Got visions of you guys breathing in cement (Yeah don’t do that!)

Heavy Lungs – It comes from a song that Danny liked. I’ve got asthma though so I’m the real heavy lungs

What’s it been like coming up in the Bristol music scene? And is there any other bands you could recommend we check out?

Heavy Lungs – It’s great, I feel like the ‘scene’ is more just a lot of people making music in the a city that just happens to nurture it. Check out Mould, Wych Elm, Bible Club, Grandmas House, MP3 Chainsaw

You guys are obviously a quartet, but if you was to add another member what instrument do you think they would play?

Heavy Lungs – Probably just a person to dance on stage

If you could tour any country in the world, where would it be and why?

Heavy Lungs – Ah there’s loads. I’d love to tour around Africa, or South America to soak in the ambience

If you needed to describe your band to an alien life form, what sentence would you use?

Heavy Lungs – We sound like we smell

Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle , which is the correct answer?

Heavy Lungs – Squirtle

If you could have any artist collaborate with you on a song, who would it be and why?

Heavy Lungs – St Vincent would be very cool, I just think she’s a great guitar player and singer. Or the remaining Beastie Boys, because they’re the best.

Most recent single Get Out, came out this year. Could you go into the lyrics a little and explain what the song is about?

Heavy Lungs – I can’t speak for Danny but I think it’s just about getting out of a situation you don’t want to be in anymore. A place or a state of mind.

Heavy Lungs – Get Out (All Rights Are Retained By Heavy Lungs)

If you could only pick 1 drink for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Heavy Lungs – Orange and peach squash

So other than Caviar, what other finer things in life do you enjoy? For me personally it’s watches, but everyone always tells me smart watches are the future ha-ha.

Heavy Lungs – I’m not sure I’m a Rolex man. I just like fancy food these days. It’s very satisfying, or fancy home stuff. I’m boring
