Man this is a tough one….

Lately I’ve been listening to Shinedown. Mostly the albums Threat to Survival & ATTENTION ATTENTION. I first heard of Shinedown from my dad who showed me their song, “How Did You Love” and I automatically fell in love with it. As a Christian, I love how I can find Christian meanings in their songs. My top three songs from Shinedown are:

    1. Cut The Cord
    2. Black Cadillac
    3. BRILLIANT

I like Ghost. I prefer rock music but I also like multi-layered harmonies and good vocals that I can sing along with. I discovered them a few years ago when Joe Elliott of Def Leppard was raving about their album Impera. I knew who Ghost was, but based just on appearance, I was afraid their music would be death metal with growling vocals (not really my thing). I gave their song Spillways a listen, and I was so surprised. Now I’m sorry it took me so long to actually give them a chance. I quickly became a big fan.

Not easy to answer. I love all kinds of music and I am very fond of the oldies and regular rock and roll and most of the music that includes my favorites goes way back. It is a mix of various bands and various artists. The songs I pick as favorites are those I can relate to and make me feel up or down or just wanting to dance. So I cannot pick just one specific band or artist. I have written many articles about bands like The Mamas and the Papas, The Beatles, The Bryds and on and on, Individual artists like Bruce Springsteen, Meat Loaf, Billy Joel and many more. I don’t think you can get true musical enjoyment if you just stick to one band or one style.

Depending on my mood I like a lot of bands. I’ve seen Def Leppard more than a dozen times. They are always a great show. I also have everything Styx ever recorded, and I’ve seen them six times. I even have a bootleg copy of The Serpent is Rising.

It is hard to beat the final tour, well almost of Motley Crue. Tommy Lee at the top the Giant Center playing the drums upside down on that track was a great site. And in the same show I got to see Alice Cooper get his head cut off. That was a bucket list item.

Poison is a local favorite band and when they come to Hershey it is a show with limitless energy. Those are a few. If I had to pick one, I would say Styx. In 1977 Grand Illusion came out and every track was outstanding. To this day on my birthday, I make sure I listen to Man in the Wilderness.

I didn’t mention I saw Guns N Roses twice as well. Two bands I really enjoy are Joan Jett and Tesla. If I had to pick a metal band, it would be Def Leppard. Vivian Campbell is an amazing guitar player. He is the favorite of my guitar teacher.

Yes, Def Leppard puts on a great show and is my wife’s favorite by far, so I’m obligated to pick them. 🙂

15 studio albums plus live cuts, best ofs and outtakes… I’m impressed you don’t know of them! But I suppose they are almost the definition of a cult band.

I stumbled upon Nothing But Thieves when they supported Muse at the O2, and then really got into them after the local student radio had Particles on their random ‘no-one wants to DJ this shift’ selection. I am just ever so slightly disappointed by Welcome to the DCC, though. Four or five top-notch songs but less consistent than their first three albums

I grew up on Mike Patton’s Faith No More (still enjoy the Chuck songs, though), Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk and Fantomas since my older sister was very avante garde in her tastes. As I’ve gotten older he is one of the only constants on any playlist I make. His raw talent is unmistakeable in everything he does, no matter how “listenable.”

The entire “California” album by Mr. Bungle is a testament to his genius. It’s like a continuation of the Divine Comedy, ending with alien gods and such. It’s great.

I’m definitely weird enough to prefer Mr. Bungle. California is actually my favorite all-time album, but Faith No More’s Evidence is probably my favorite all-time song. Overall I’d pick FNM because they are a more consistent listen, but Patton’s side projects allow him so much more breathing room that they are always interesting to see, since his influence is greater.

They were formed by Shaun Ryder after the Happy Mondays split in the mid 90s. There’s is Ryder, Bez, Kermit who was a of member of the Ruthless Rap Assassins and I can’t remember the name of the others. Their songs are psychedelic funk mixed with electronic rock and stuff. I think they are brilliant. Definitely check them out if you have chance

I’ve only really collected CDs and never been into Vinyl. But a mate gave me a few years ago a 7” vinyl of Step On by the Mondays and it’s an original Factory records release. I haven’t got any intention of selling it but it’s nice to have a prominent piece of music history from, in my taste of music, paved the way, or even part of it, for Manchester being the place to be and revolutionising music as the last impresionable artists as Oasis in the words of Noel Gallagher were that being a band and something people looked up to at the frontman and wanted to be them, died with them. I wouldn’t say that new music today is anything to even listen to. The music of 30/40/50 years ago is still more important than anything released today. Sorry, I’ll get down off my soap box now 😂

That’s a great idea. I met Bez a few years ago as a friend knew him from a crazy situation at some festival in Cornwall (the name of it escapes me) and I was struggling at the time with my bipolar, so we went to a Happy Mondays gig in Leeds. Another friend is a promoter there and he organised the after party so I got to meet Bez and Rowetta from the Mondays and spent ages with Bez as my mate knew him so well and that. I took his book and an album (Bez’s Madchester Anthems) to sign but I was that star struck I never got around to asking him to sign them. I did though get to freaky dance with him and my friend filmed it. It is something that made me feel so much better as I was down at the time. I’ll post the video in a post in a minute so you can see it if you’re online. You’re twisting my melon man 🪇

That’s an absolutely impossible question to answer! It depends what time you ask me, and my answer would be a band from sny time since, say, the mid-to-late 50’s (anything with Coltrane in it), or even earlier than that, to, like last week. Psychedelic and pop-ish ’60’s stuff, “classic rock,” punk (the real kind from the ’70’s), disco (no, I’m not joking–there’s some good stuff), grunge (I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard Nirvana), however you’d classify Audioslave, STP, etc., contemporary alternative bands (including anything my son’s playing on 🙂 ), ambient stuff like Eno and William Basinski (not exactly bands), etc.

I will say that, since watching “Stop Making Sense” for the first time 🤯 a few months ago, I’ve been kind of obsessed with David Byrne and the Talking Heads.

    Sorry you asked? 🙂

Sorry–I didn’t see this until today! I’m glad we’re in agreement about so much music!

My son is playing guitar & keyboards with other bands around NYC lately, but on his last (and first) album he played everything but drums. It’s an uncharacteristically chill (a reviewer called it “ethereal”) and personal album that kind of surprised even him (who has also been heavily into shredding the hell out of songs by Dream Theater, etc., as well as Classical and jazz).

He did do live shows from that album with a band last year, but now I think he’s working on other stuff.

Since you were kind enough to ask, this is the album (again, it may be too chill and introspective for your taste, but it IS kinda beautiful, in my COMPLETELY objective opinion 😎): https://open.spotify.com/album/3jyfDKaeDASu85DoRe99i7?si=KPBz4t_CQvOQL1xvNNTosw

Another “pick your favorite child” question! 🙂 Everyone knows I’m an unapologetic Bowie fan, but he’s not a “band.” He would recruit the best musicians for a project, so his bands were always fluid–just like our day-to-day musical tastes!

That said, my absolute all-time favorite band would have to be The Rolling Stones. I don’t claim to love anything they’ve done post-turn-of-the-century, but in their heyday they were incredibly good. I even got to see them twice (one more time than Bowie) in concert. When I downsized, I sold off all my vinyl except for Bowie and the Stones. But, I have loved many other artists/bands over the years. Music is not monogamous!

Of course I liked them. I guess maybe I didn’t choose them because they were so short-lived. A year and a half, is all, and more like part of the fluidity of the musicians Bowie worked with throughout his career.

He was a bona fide maverick. I liked the way he reinvented himself with his different personas, he was never static and always moving with the times. It’s a shame he isn’t around now as I for one would prefer to see him in concert than Taylor Swift or any of the artists around today

Music from my youth was late sixties, early seventies. Seventies rock bands were the best! I listen to loads of different types of music today. If someone said I could have tickets tomorrow to see any band, I would choose The Dead South. I found them two years ago, and I love their stuff. Lead singer Nate with that raspy voice, Danny lugging that cello around like a guitar, a banjo, and a mandolin. What’s not to love! (And these guys sent me down a rabbit hole to Billy Strings – Tinfoil and Turmoil – oh my!)

This is a really tough one. I have music for moods, like I think most individuals have.

    My all-time favourite band is

    MUSE
Their early stuff to now is amazing, Matt Bellamy is such a creative singer and songwriter. The messages in every song they perform are breathtaking.

I do have to agree with the person above. Shinedown is also a superb band. Boom bang being one of my favourite songs.

However, I was also introduced to Volbeat. Lola Montez is definitely up there.

With MUSE being my favourite, they are on my Spotify repeat quite a lot. However, I have seemingly gone down the Linkin Park rabbit hole again. Chester Bennington, WOW, just WOW.

I could type for days about my favourite music, but I would be here all day. I am very eclectic. I even enjoy classical or worldly music like Enya and Enigma. And I might as well throw in a little dance music for the hidden chav inside me.

    Loves 💜

I am squarely a child of the 90s with lots of great bands to choose from but I’ll go with the bands I (still) listen to most frequently: Foo Fighters, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins (shout out to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stones, Aerosmith & The Doors).

Too many groups that I love from folks to jazz to rock and country. Two groups that currently appeal to me is the folk group Tophouse. Just breezy, uptempo folk rock kind of stuff. A lot of fun in person too. And about a decade ago I was introduce to a Finnish band, Poets of the Fall. A distinctive sound that is instantly recognizable (at least for me). “Carnival of Rust” is one I go back to.

I’m a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to music. On the rock side, I love Fleetwood Mac, and when it comes to country, I groove to The Highwaymen. But if we’re talking big band music, nothing beats Glenn Miller and His Orchestra from the golden era.

This week it’s Zeppelin again because we saw a band called Classic Albums Live! Play “Led Zeppelin IV” and it was killer. It also made me re-appreciate Robert Plant’s talent and range back in those days. The singer had his work cut out for him, I’ll tell you.
