Interview
What’s it like touring with Monster Magnet?
Daily Thompson – It was a blast. We know Bob and Gerrit from our tour with The Atomic Bitchwax. The band is so nice and of course it is an honour to tour with these legends.
Whats the music scene like in Germany ? (Do you have any particular favourite bands coming through)?
Daily Thompson – We like to support our friends from our hometown Dortmund in Germany like Stargo (Stoner Rock), Scorched Oak (heavy stoner rock) or Mother Bear (doom), so if you have time, give it a listen 😉
You mention you are influenced by Alice In Chains, what was it exactly about them that influenced your music?
Daily Thompson – Mostly the two-part singing of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. And of course they are one of the most important bands from the 90ies grunge scene, so their music but also their style to play songs influenced us a lot.

What made you write a love song to the ocean?
Daily Thompson – We visited the states for four weeks in 2023, so we also went to Long Beach CA, there was a big festival with Cypress Hill, Jack Johnson and more and we stay with the locals and made kind of a watching party behind the fence and the next day we sot on the beach and then it came to our mind how beautiful it is to live near by the ocean, that was the start for our song diamond waves.
Fun fact, when we recorded the album in Port Orchard we drove every morning to the studio along the seaside, it was magic.
Is the name of your 6th studio album (Chuparosa) a connection to the shrub with that nickname or a town in Red Dead Redemption 2 ?
Daily Thompson – Haha, as I already mentioned we were in the beginning of 2023 for four weeks in the states and we also visited the Jushua Tree national park. So I`ve had this info map and I saw the desert plant Chuparosa and I had the idea that it would be a good name for an album or a song or both 😉
Where did the band name come from?
Daily Thompson – From the british sportsman Daley Thompson, but also from the author Hunter S. Thompson.
What limitations do you find being a trio? Would you ever add a 4th member?
Daily Thompson – We don`t feel that there are limitations as a trio, but sometimes you have to be creative, because when you record a song, you can`t record something that you cannot play live.
If we would ever add a 4th band member it would be a second guitar player but only for live shows, maybe like Pat Smear who joined Nirvana as second guitar for their tour and the MTV unplugged gig.

Was the heavy rock sound intentional from the get-go or is it just where the creative process took you?
Daily Thompson – When we start writing songs we never think about a particular genre, we do what we want and what makes fun. That is why our range goes from desert rock, blues, grunge, stoner to indie and alternative.
First we do music for ourselves we would also play music even if we wouldn`t have a label or a booking agency, because it`s our passion, but of course it is so cool that so many people like what we do and we never take it for granted.
What is it like working with the absolute ICON that is Tony Reed?
Daily Thompson – Tony is a master of sound and a wonderful human being. We had so much fun, he picked us up every morning with his van and we listened to so many different bands and styles of music, he always told us something about it, it was a like a music history lesson.
It was really interesting that the recordings with Tony sounds so much better than our other records. For our last album “God Of Spinoza” we recorded the tracks and send all of them to Tony, so he did the mix and the mastering, too and of course it sounds great as well, but we think “Chuparosa” is so different in a positive way, for me it`s the best DT record (sound and songs) we recorded so far.
Can you tell us a funny story about one of your shows?
Daily Thompson – Oh ha, something funny happens at every show, our last show in Cologne was sold out and it was sweatie and hot as hell, so after the first song Danny and I just looked at each other searching for a place to vomit (if necessary) and we both look straight to the drums, our drummer Babblz just shouted “no, not here”, fortunately Danny and I survived the set.
So we as a band always have funny stories, of course we are so prefessional that nobody notice it ;D

What’s the best festival you have attended in Germany?
Daily Thompson – There are two festivals, the Orange Blossom Special Festival it is a lovely indie Festival where you find so much different artists and it is an honour to play there and of course the Freak Valley Festival (I think Tony also played there with Mos Generator a few years ago).
There you find bands from the stoner/psych scene but also bands like Amyl and the Sniffers or Osees, both festivals are made with love and not for the profit. The crowd is always great and it is always a special atmosphere there.
If you had to choose 1 of the holidays to remove (Easter, Halloween, Christmas , etc) which would it be and why?
Daily Thompson – Easter, it`s so unnecessary and to be honest, who believes that someone rises from the dead? It’s not possible unless you’re Lemmy.
Who is “A girl like you ” about, can you give us a little detail?
Daily Thompson – It is not about a certain person, it`s more about that feeling you have when you feel bottomless love and you don`t know how long it will last.
You saw Jesus in a taco bell, what was you eating and do you think it’s just Jesus or are other religious entities there too ?
Daily Thompson – Ha, we are not religious at all, but this song is like a movie in our heads. We sat in a taco bell (I can`t remeber what we were eating) and we imagine how would Jesus react when his favorite menue is not on the card anymore. Maybe we were a bit high but we had a lot of fun.
What are some preconceptions that people have about stoner rock that make you laugh?
Daily Thompson – The fact that I don`t see us as a stoner band makes it easy, because I also had preconceptions about the scene like: always the same riffs and bad singers.
That is ridiculous, when we startet playing live with “real” stoner bands, you recognize that first of all the scene is one of the best in the whole world of music, they are interested in the sound, the bands are playing walls of riffs and all people doesn`t matter if band, crowd or staff are just kind and lovely.
