HUSHMONEY – Greg Poblete

HUSHMONEY – Freakout Handshake (All Rights Retained by HUSHMONEY)

From Los Angeles, California, HUSHMONEY is an abrasive, punk-rock outfit fronted by Phil Matarese (HBO’s Animals) riding the wave of an incredible 2024 self-titled debut album. HUSHMONEY is filled with gritty guitars, punchy drums, and infectiously catchy choruses. The album has a 90s slacker rock flair sounding like any track could easily slide right into the soundtrack for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

The album’s themes hover around love, whether it’s self-love, romantic love, essentially all the messiness that comes with the overwhelming feeling. With HUSHMONEY being just shy of 30 minutes, there is a range of vibes from sweet and tender songs like “Same Thing (For Mojo)” and more assertive tracks like “Freakout Handshake.”

As a unit, HUSHMONEY have plenty of bite, tons of energy, and the vocals are charismatic as hell. The guitars are crunchy with plenty of impressive licks, the low-ends hit directly to the heart, and the drums pack a powerful punch. It’s evident that this project was made out of love and care, and HUSHMONEY deserve to receive all the love they put out in return.
